A State High Court in Edo has officially confirmed Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).

The court made this ruling on Friday, dismissing a lawsuit filed by the faction led by Lamidi Apapa.

Suspension Notice and Court Decision

Prior to the court ruling, some party members at the ward level had issued a notice of suspension against Abure.

However, Justice Emmanuel Aihamoje, the presiding judge, declared the case without merit and threw it out.

Invalidity of the Suspension

During the two-hour court session, Justice Aihamoje highlighted that the ward executive in Uromi, specifically in Ward 3, did not possess the authority, as defined by the LP constitution, Act 13 & 17, and the amended Electoral Act of 2022, to remove the national chairman.

Consequently, the judge, in Suit No: HUC/21/2023, imposed a perpetual injunction against Lamidi Apapa and his faction.

This injunction prevents them from removing or suspending Abure as the national chairman until a new national convention of the party is convened.

Exceeding Powers and Impersonation

Furthermore, Justice Aihamoje emphasized that the supposed ward three executives, who carried out the suspension, acted beyond the powers granted to them by the Labour Party Constitution.

Following the court’s verdict, Thompson Ehiguese, the LP Ward 3 Chairman, addressed journalists, stating that the ruling has exposed impostors who falsely claimed to be members of the party.

He further identified these individuals as being from Edo North and affiliated with the APC.

The Impact and Future Outlook

Ehiguese expressed his congratulations to the Labour Party and the Obidient Movement for their unwavering support of Comrade Julius Abure throughout the orchestrated crisis within the party.

He emphasized that the court’s decision explicitly maintains Barrister Julius Abure as the national chairman until the party’s upcoming convention next year.

He concluded by affirming the collective determination of the party to reclaim the mandate bestowed upon Mr. Peter Obi and the Labour Party by the Nigerian masses in the previous presidential election.
