Legendary football figure Jomo Sono recently shared intriguing details about Thembinkosi Lorch’s switch from Orlando Pirates to Mamelodi Sundowns earlier this year.

Sono disclosed that his nephew, Rulani Mokwena, who was formerly the head coach at Sundowns, sought his advice regarding the potential signing of Lorch.

However, Sono revealed that the deal faced resistance from a key figure at Sundowns, referred to as the “big chief,” who turned out to be Flemming Berg, the sporting director.

Berg expressed concerns about Lorch’s age and the financial implications of investing in a player over 30.

Preferring to stay clear of internal club politics, Sono advised Mokwena to stand firm if he believed in Lorch’s potential value to the team.

Despite the challenges, Lorch eventually signed with Sundowns.

Thembinkosi Lorch, the talented player from Free State, celebrated his 31st birthday shortly after making 20 appearances for Sundowns between February and May.

His contributions included 10 games in the DStv Premiership, four in the Nedbank Cup, and six in the CAF Champions League, where he scored six goals and provided three assists.

Insights into Negotiations

Reflecting on the transfer during an interview on Marawa Sports Worldwide, Sono mentioned, “He [Rulani] discussed it with me.

The big chief there! The white man, what’s his name? He [Berg] didn’t want Lorch because he felt that Lorch was over age.

You can’t invest so much money in a player who is over 30.”

Avoiding Political Entanglements

Sono emphasized his reluctance to involve himself in Sundowns’ internal politics, stating, “I don’t want to be involved. It is your decision.

You want him; you fight for him.

If you want something, you fight for it.

If you don’t want it, you don’t fight for it.”

Conclusion

This revelation underscores the intricate dynamics and decision-making complexities inherent in high-profile football transfers.

It highlights the cautious approach clubs often take toward older players, balancing their experience with concerns over age and financial investment.
