As cashew trees begin to bear fruit and harvest season gets underway, farmers in Kwara South are being urged to put their safety first.
The region, known for its rich agricultural output, has recently faced rising security concerns, prompting warnings from local security groups.
Advisory from Joint Security Watch
The Joint Security Watch, Kwara South, spoke out on Wednesday, with its coordinator, Elder Olaitan Oyin-Zubair, stressing the need for caution.
“We understand that this is the season when farmers should be enjoying the fruits of their labour,” he said, “but the current security situation demands vigilance.”
The group advised farmers to avoid venturing into isolated or high-risk farms until conditions improve.
Safety Measures for Essential Farm Visits
For those who must visit their farms, the advisory emphasized strict safety protocols: moving in groups, coordinating with local vigilante hunters, community security teams, or recognized security agencies.
Oyin-Zubair was clear: “No farmer should go alone at this time. Protecting your life is more important than any harvest. No amount of produce is worth risking your life.”
Ongoing Security Efforts
The Joint Security Watch reassured residents that coordinated security operations are underway.
Working alongside community-based security outfits and government authorities, the goal is to reclaim farmlands, secure forest routes, and restore confidence among local farmers.
The group also called for calm, vigilance, and cooperation from all stakeholders, promising that efforts to stabilize the area and allow safe agricultural activity are ongoing.
Kwara South’s Agricultural Significance
Kwara South is a major hub for cashew production and other cash crops.
Yet, recent months have seen increasing reports of attacks by criminal elements around farms and forest corridors, leaving many farmers concerned for their safety.
Farmers in the region are now balancing the urgent need to harvest their crops with the very real need to protect themselves, highlighting the importance of community coordination and adherence to security advisories.
