Fans and onlookers were left doing a double take when the actor was spotted on set of Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, looking almost unrecognisable.
It’s been a while since Depp has been in the Hollywood spotlight in a major way, making this return all the more striking.
Stepping Into Scrooge’s Shoes
Exclusive photos show Depp taking on the role of Ebenezer Scrooge, Charles Dickens’ iconic anti-hero, in a fresh retelling of the classic holiday tale.
Known for playing characters on the fringes of society, Depp now portrays a man forced to face his own wrongdoings before ultimately finding redemption.
This marks his first major studio film in four years, following the 2022 courtroom drama surrounding his highly publicised legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, which dominated headlines and tested public opinion.
Reinventing Himself on Set
Aside from a brief appearance in the French-language film Jeanne du Barry, Depp’s presence in big-budget cinema seemed uncertain—until now.
On set, the 63-year-old actor looked almost unrecognisable, sporting a blue brocade overcoat, a black cap, and long grey sideburns.
Between takes, he was seen laughing and shivering alongside co-star Andrea Riseborough, who plays the ghost of Christmas past.
A Classic Story Reimagined
Dickens’ 1843 novel tells the story of Scrooge, a bitter and miserly old man, who is visited on Christmas Eve by the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, along with the spirits of Christmas past, present, and future.
Riseborough brought a haunting presence to her role, wearing a flowing white gown, a white wig, and striking white contact lenses to create an ethereal effect.
Star-Studded Ensemble
The film boasts an impressive ensemble, featuring Sir Ian McKellen, Daisy Ridley from Star Wars, Ellie Bamber of Bohemian Rhapsody, Rupert Grint from Harry Potter, Tramell Tillman of Severance, and Sam Claflin of The Hunger Games.
However, the production faces stiff competition from a Warner Bros adaptation directed by Nosferatu’s Robert Eggers, starring Willem Dafoe.
Johnny Depp’s Perspective on the Past Years
Reflecting on the media frenzy surrounding his personal life, Depp has dismissed reports of inactivity as “fantastically, horrifically written fiction.”
Speaking in 2023, he said, “I’ve had about 17 comebacks, and I don’t understand it because I didn’t go anywhere. It’s a bizarre mystery.”
Clearly, the actor feels far from finished.
Upcoming Projects and Rumours
Looking ahead, Depp is also set to star alongside Penélope Cruz in the action film Day Drinker later this year.
Meanwhile, rumours swirl that he may return as Jack Sparrow in a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean installment, in discussions with producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
