The Merseyside community is in mourning after the passing of Jenny Collins, a cherished figure at BBC Radio Merseyside.

Collins was one of the station’s founding members and had a broadcasting career that spanned decades, leaving a lasting mark on local radio.

Remembering a Broadcasting Pioneer

Jenny Collins was there at the very beginning when BBC Radio Merseyside launched on 22 November 1967, broadcasting from Commerce House in Liverpool.

She wore many hats during her career, working both behind the scenes and in front of the microphone.

Her work helped shape the station into a cornerstone of local radio.

Colleague Roger Lyon, who also broadcasts on BBC Radio Merseyside, shared the news on Facebook, expressing his deep sadness.

“Very sad to hear today of the passing of one of the founding members of Radio Merseyside, the lovely Jenny Collins,” he wrote.

Letters, Memories, and Last Encounters

Lyon recalled the many letters he exchanged with Jenny, including ones from the mid-1990s while he was in Australia.

At the time, Collins was acting as Programme Controller, carefully planning which shows he could host upon his return.

“I still have letters that we swapped,” he said, highlighting the personal connection they shared beyond the studio.

The last time Lyon saw Collins was about four years ago when she appeared as a guest on the station, reflecting on her decades-long career.

He remembered her fondly, noting her warm personality and distinctive broadcasting voice.

A Life Intertwined with Music and Media

Jenny was married to Steve Voce, a respected jazz critic and broadcaster who hosted the long-running Jazz Panorama program. Sadly, Steve passed away in 2023.

Together, they were a familiar presence in Liverpool’s radio scene, supporting and inspiring generations of listeners and colleagues.

Tributes Pour In

News of Jenny’s passing sparked heartfelt tributes online.

Fans and former colleagues shared memories of her shows, including Junior Spin, which was particularly aimed at younger audiences.

One BBC colleague reflected on Collins’ mentorship, crediting her guidance with launching a 30-year career at BBC Merseyside.

Her contributions to local radio, her kindness, and her passion for broadcasting have left an indelible mark on Liverpool and beyond.

She will be remembered not only for her voice on the airwaves but also for the warmth and encouragement she gave to those around her.
