Former BBC newsreader Jan Leeming has stirred conversation after sharing her frustration over a disruptive child during a birthday lunch at THE PIG in Bridge, near Canterbury, Kent.

The 84-year-old criticized parents and staff alike, saying the child’s screaming spoiled the occasion and arguing that families should consider babysitters when visiting high-end dining venues.

Birthday Lunch Gone Awry

Leeming explained that she had taken a friend to THE PIG to celebrate a birthday.

The venue, known for its scenic locations and upscale menus, offers three-course meals just under £30, with wine bottles ranging from £35 to £600.

While she described the ambiance as “lovely,” the dining experience was interrupted by a young child whose parents she described as “oblivious.”

She also expressed frustration with staff, claiming that when she complained, she was treated as if she were the one in the wrong, and noted some employees seemed to entertain the child rather than manage the disruption.

Social Media Reactions

The ex-newscaster’s comments quickly resonated online, with X (formerly Twitter) users weighing in.

Many supported her stance, with one commenter noting: “Parents these days just don’t discipline their children and don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.”

Others suggested that children under 12 should not be allowed in pubs and restaurants.

Leeming clarified her position, acknowledging that three children were present but insisting: “If you can afford to eat there, get a babysitter!” She also recognized that banning children legally is complicated and could hurt business, concluding, “We just have to like it, lump it or not go again.”

THE PIG Responds

A spokesperson for THE PIG emphasized inclusivity, stating: “Everyone is welcome at THE PIG—at Bridge Place and we go to great lengths to ensure that all of our guests, young and old, are looked after by our wonderful team.”

The hotel and restaurant chain currently operates ten locations across the UK, including the Cotswolds, New Forest, Hampshire, and Cornwall, with plans to open two more venues in South Warwickshire and the Kent-East Sussex border area.

Jan Leeming’s Storied Career

Jan Leeming enjoyed a long broadcasting career at the BBC between 1969 and 1987, including a stint as a newsreader from 1980, hosting Pebble Mill at One, BBC Radio 4’s Women’s Hour, and the 1982 Eurovision Song Contest.

She also participated in I’m a Celebrity… in 2006, finishing sixth.

Her personal life has been equally eventful.

Leeming has been married five times and has one son, Jonathan.

Most recently, she revealed in April 2025 that she had joined a dating site and is open to marriage again.

THE PIG: A Blend of Luxury and Local Charm

THE PIG prides itself on its combination of high-quality local food, wine, and immersive countryside experiences.

The restaurant menu includes three-course meals, starters like smoked trout or mushroom house salad, and sides such as “flowerpot of chips” and garden salads.

Wine selections feature bottles from £35 to £600, sourced from English vineyards, small growers, and classic old-world producers.

The chain’s ethos emphasizes casual luxury: “From seriously good local food and knock-out drinks to cosy bedrooms and unmissable experiences, every visit invites you to settle in and slow down.”

Founders Step Back After Years of Dedication

Robin and Judy Hutson, the founders behind THE PIG, announced their retirement in 2024, two years after partnering with private equity firm KSL Capital Partners.

Robin explained that while stepping back was difficult, they wanted to enjoy more time with family and focus on health and leisure after decades of launching successful hotel projects.

He described the venture as the pinnacle of their careers, reflecting pride in the accomplishments of their team and the brand they built.
