As transfer season heats up and fans start dreaming about next season’s possibilities, Jamie Carragher has already thrown his support behind Manchester United’s first bold move of the summer—signing Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.
The former Liverpool defender shared his thoughts on Sky Sports, reacting to widespread reports from Brazil that United have sealed a £62.5 million deal for the Brazilian striker.
Cunha has been impressive all season, tallying 17 goals and seven assists across competitions, and Carragher didn’t hold back his admiration.
Carragher Praises Cunha as a Smart Fit for United’s Style
“I think it’s a great signing. He’s a brilliant player,” Carragher said enthusiastically.
“I love watching him play.”
He went on to say that Cunha had already made it into his “Team of the Season” at the halfway point of the campaign and continued to impress in the latter stages—especially when Carragher saw him in action against Manchester City a few weeks back.
The Brazilian’s pace and sharpness stood out, reinforcing Carragher’s belief that he’ll thrive under United’s current system.
Carragher added, “We know how the manager at Manchester United wants to play.
He likes having two players who can operate as No. 10s, and I think Cunha fits that mold perfectly.”
Amorim Gets His Man as United Trigger Release Clause
Cunha looks set to become Ruben Amorim’s first major signing since taking over the reins at Old Trafford.
He’ll follow Danish left-back Patrick Dorgu, who arrived from Lecce back in February.
Amorim has long admired Cunha, and reports suggest United triggered the player’s release clause after weeks of speculation.
Interestingly, Amorim and Cunha were spotted chatting in the tunnel at Old Trafford after United lost 1-0 to Wolves last month—perhaps a sign that this move had been in the works for a while.
Garnacho’s Future Now in Question After Cunha Signing
While fans are excited about Cunha joining the Red Devils, not everyone is guaranteed to benefit from his arrival.
Carragher pointed out that the move could create uncertainty for 20-year-old winger Alejandro Garnacho, who’s played in 36 of United’s 37 Premier League games this season.
“It’s not good news for Garnacho,” Carragher admitted.
“Amad Diallo might end up in one of those roles alongside Cunha, or maybe Bruno Fernandes plays there at times. There’s a lot of competition coming.”
Garnacho’s Potential Exit Tied to Financial Pressures
Beyond tactical reshuffling, Carragher hinted at deeper financial reasons why Garnacho might be on the chopping block.
He noted that, because Garnacho came through United’s academy, selling him would count as pure profit in the club’s accounting books—a helpful move for a club dealing with Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rule (PSR) concerns.
“There’s a lot of talk about Garnacho moving on,” Carragher said.
“If a decent offer comes in, I think United probably will take it.”
