Former Liverpool defender and football pundit Jamie Carragher will not be declared bankrupt after settling an outstanding tax debt with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

The bankruptcy petition against the 48-year-old was dismissed by Judge Nicholas Briggs at the Insolvency and Companies Court on Tuesday after the court was informed that the debt had been paid.

Kevin Hassan, representing HMRC, confirmed during the London hearing that the outstanding amount had been settled. No exact figure was disclosed in court, although previous reports estimated the debt at between £700,000 and £800,000.

The petition was originally filed in August, raising questions about the financial affairs of one of Liverpool’s most recognisable former players.

Carragher Had Promised to Resolve the Tax Matter

When the bankruptcy proceedings first emerged, a spokesperson for Carragher described the issue as a private tax matter that should have been dealt with earlier.

The representative said steps were being taken to settle the outstanding amount and indicated that the matter was expected to be resolved shortly.

HMRC also explained its approach to taxpayers who fall behind on their obligations, saying it tries to help those who engage with the department to manage and clear their debts.

The tax authority noted that it can offer arrangements such as instalment payments and that bankruptcy petitions are pursued only as a last resort.

With the debt now settled and the petition dismissed, the bankruptcy proceedings against Carragher will not continue.

Liverpool Legend Built an Illustrious Playing Career

Carragher spent his entire professional playing career at Liverpool, making 737 appearances for the club before retiring in 2013.

He was a central member of the team that won the Champions League in 2005, when Liverpool produced a remarkable comeback against AC Milan in Istanbul after trailing 3-0 at half-time.

Carragher played every second of that final, which remains one of the most celebrated nights in the club’s history.

His achievements also included Liverpool’s treble-winning campaign in 2001, while he earned 38 caps for England and represented his country at Euro 2004 and the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.

His lengthy association with Liverpool and contribution to the club’s success have established him as a prominent figure in the team’s modern history.

Former Defender Continues to Earn a Living in Football Media

Since retiring from professional football, Carragher has developed a successful career as a television analyst.

He regularly appears on Sky Sports to discuss the Premier League and works for American broadcaster CBS Sports during Champions League coverage.

He is also a familiar face on the Stick to Football podcast, which is operated by Gary Neville’s media company, The Overlap.

Beyond broadcasting, Carragher is listed as a director of four companies and as a member of a limited liability partnership.

His earnings during his playing days were substantial, with his annual Liverpool salary reported to have reached approximately £5 million at its peak.

Carragher Continues His Work Supporting Young People

Away from broadcasting, Carragher has been involved in charitable initiatives focused on improving opportunities for young people.

He founded the 23 Foundation, which aims to support young people in Merseyside. He is also a co-founder of Football For Change, an initiative that uses education, sport and training to help tackle child poverty.

In May, Carragher took on an advisory role with Marine, a sixth-tier football club based in Merseyside.

He described the club as a community-focused organisation with a clear vision for its future and said he was pleased to support its continued development.

His involvement reflects his ongoing connection to football in the region where he grew up and built his playing career.

Carragher Opens Up About His Marriage and Family

Carragher has also spoken publicly about the importance of his family life, particularly his long relationship with his wife, Nicola.

The couple married in 2005 after being together for several years. They have two children: James, 23, who plays as a defender for League One side Wigan Athletic, and Mia, 22, who works as an actress and model.

Their wedding took place at a 17th-century stately home on the Staffordshire-Shropshire border after their original venue, Allerton Castle in Yorkshire, was partially damaged by fire.

In an interview with The Times earlier this year, Carragher reflected on their relationship, saying they had been together for almost 30 years and describing Nicola as both his wife and his best friend.

He also spoke about the major moments in his football career, including representing England, Liverpool’s 2001 treble and the 2005 Champions League final.

Despite those achievements, Carragher said having Nicola beside him remained particularly important.

Bankruptcy Case Ends as Carragher Maintains His Football Commitments

The dismissal of the bankruptcy petition brings the court proceedings over Carragher’s unpaid tax bill to an end following confirmation that the debt has been cleared.

The former defender continues to balance his broadcasting work with charitable projects and his advisory role at Marine.

While the tax dispute attracted attention because of his high profile in English football, the court’s decision means he will not be made bankrupt over the matter.
