Hollywood has been rocked by the tragic deaths of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, and one of the industry’s most unexpected voices has stepped forward to remember the late director.
James Woods, often known for his outspoken support of former President Donald Trump, shared heartfelt memories of Reiner, praising him for his kindness and influence on his career.
Speaking on Fox News’ Jesse Watters Primetime on Monday night, Woods described Reiner as “a Godsend” in his life and expressed deep grief over the couple’s untimely deaths.
Despite their political differences, Woods emphasized that Reiner’s character and generosity left a lasting impression on him.
A Career Saved by Friendship
Woods recounted how Reiner cast him in the 1996 film Ghosts of Mississippi at a time when his career was faltering.
“Rob literally saved my career and really put me back on track,” Woods said, recalling how the role led to an Academy Award nomination.
He praised the director for advocating for him when studios hesitated and described Reiner as someone he “loved, respected, and cherished.”
Highlighting their bond, Woods said, “I judge people by how they treat me, and Rob Reiner was always on my side.
We got along great, we loved each other.”
He explained that even though they didn’t always agree politically, they shared mutual respect and a love for the country.
Defending a Legacy Against Criticism
Woods didn’t hold back in criticizing those who spoke poorly of Reiner after his death.
“Saying horrible things about him is infuriating and distasteful,” Woods said.
“Because you disagree with people doesn’t mean you have to hate them.”
His remarks appeared to be directed at Donald Trump, who, in a Truth Social post, described Reiner as suffering from “Trump derangement syndrome” and called him “very bad for our country.”
Trump doubled down in comments from the Oval Office, maintaining his criticism of the late director while blaming Reiner for pushing the so-called “Russia hoax.”
The Tragic Circumstances of the Reiners’ Death
Rob Reiner, 79, and Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home on Sunday.
Their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was arrested on suspicion of murder and is being held without bail.
Authorities have yet to reveal a motive, but prosecutors are reviewing the case to determine charges.
James Woods, visibly emotional, reflected on Reiner’s life and the impact he had on friends and colleagues.
He noted that Reiner never spoke negatively about others, even in situations where many might have, citing the example of Charlie Kirk, who had been targeted online after his assassination.
A Complex Father-Son Relationship
The Reiner family had a complicated history, particularly between Rob and his son Nick, who struggled with addiction and periods of homelessness.
In 2016, they collaborated on Being Charlie, a film exploring a father-son relationship affected by substance abuse.
While the film was not autobiographical, it incorporated elements of their lives and reportedly helped strengthen their bond.
Rob Reiner, an Emmy-winning actor and director known for All in the Family, When Harry Met Sally…, and The Princess Bride, was also a longtime liberal activist.
Singer Reiner, a photographer and producer, championed LGBTQ+ rights. They had been married for 36 years.
A Nation Reflects on Loss
Hollywood and political figures alike reacted to the tragedy, condemning Trump’s comments as “disgusting and vile” while mourning the loss of a cinematic legend and his wife.
Woods’ words serve as a reminder of the power of personal relationships and respect, even across political divides.
“Rob Reiner was a friend, an artist, an icon of Hollywood, and a patriot,” Woods said, his voice breaking with emotion.
“I am just absolutely devastated.”
