Jack Schlossberg, grandson of President John F. Kennedy, shared an emotional and carefully curated tribute to his sister, Tatiana Schlossberg, on Instagram on Monday.
The post included ten excerpts from poems and classic writings, alongside a photo of the siblings together when they were younger.
He captioned the post with a single cherry blossom emoji, letting the symbolism of renewal and fragility speak for itself.
A Thoughtful Curation of Words and Memories
The tribute was more than just images—it was a deliberate selection of texts, all presented in the same font and style, reflecting Jack’s care in honoring Tatiana’s memory.
The first excerpt came from Tatiana’s own book, Inconspicuous Consumption, published in 2019, which explores the hidden environmental costs of everyday choices.
In it, she wrote about the responsibility each generation bears toward the planet and future generations: “It’s up to us to create a country that takes seriously its obligations to the planet, to each other, and to the people who will be born into a world that looks different than ours has for the past 10,000 years or so.”
She concluded with a note of optimism: “Come on, it will be fun (?)”—a line that captured both her idealism and humor.
Tatiana Schlossberg’s Life and Legacy
Tatiana, an environmental journalist, passed away from blood cancer on December 30 at the age of 35.
She had revealed her acute myeloid leukemia diagnosis just six weeks earlier, explaining in The New Yorker that she had felt perfectly healthy until routine blood tests after the birth of her second child revealed the disease.
Her death adds to a series of tragedies in the Kennedy family.
Tatiana’s grandmother Jackie Kennedy died of lymphoma in 1994, her father’s legacy was cut short by assassination, and her uncle John F. Kennedy Jr. died in a plane crash.
Despite her illness, Tatiana expressed gratitude for the support of her mother, Caroline Kennedy, and siblings, Rose and Jack, calling it “a great gift, even though I feel their pain every day.”
Addressing the Kennedy Curse
In her essay, Tatiana confronted the so-called “Kennedy curse” directly, reflecting on her desire to protect her family from further heartbreak.
“For my whole life, I have tried to be good, to be a good student and a good sister and a good daughter, and to protect my mother and never make her upset or angry,” she wrote.
“Now I have added a new tragedy to her life, to our family’s life, and there’s nothing I can do to stop it.”
Inspiration From Literature and History
Jack Schlossberg’s tribute went beyond his sister’s words, drawing on timeless writings to honor her spirit.
He included passages from Moby Dick about the immortality of whales, quotes from Abraham Lincoln including the Gettysburg Address, poems by Alfred Lord Tennyson, Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Frost, and Rita S. Beer, and even the Buddha’s last words.
He also shared a quote from his grandfather: “There are three things in life which are real: God, human folly and laughter.
Since the first two are beyond our comprehension, we must do what we can with the third.”
Social Media Outpouring of Support
The tribute resonated with many. Within three hours, Jack’s post garnered nearly 40,000 likes and more than 1,000 comments.
Fans and followers flooded the thread with heart emojis, broken hearts, and messages of sympathy, expressing grief while celebrating Tatiana’s life and legacy.
A Family Remembered
Through his Instagram post, Jack Schlossberg not only honored Tatiana’s memory but also highlighted the values she lived by: environmental awareness, compassion, and resilience in the face of life’s challenges.
The careful selection of texts, images, and quotes served as both a personal farewell and a reminder of the impact one life can leave on family, friends, and the world.
