On Thursday, July 20, 2023, Fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) engaged in a clash with the troops of the Nigerian Army in Borno State.
The confrontation took place in the Monguno Local Government Area of the state and involved the Sector 3 multi-national joint task force (MNJTF).
Additionally, a separate operation was conducted by the Nigerian Army in Kagarko LGA of Kaduna to raid bandits’ hideouts.
ISWAP Insurgents’ Attack in Monguno, Borno State
According to reports, the ISWAP terrorists launched an invasion on Thursday, arriving at the location in Monguno on several Hilux trucks equipped with anti-aircraft guns.
Some of the insurgents rode on motorcycles while others approached on foot, targeting the troops stationed at Charlie 6 in Monguno town.
Renowned counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, confirmed the encounter between the insurgents and the army.
Army’s Response and Foiling of ISWAP Attack
Despite the insurgents’ initial aggression, the troops of the Sector 3 MNJTF effectively confronted them, leading to a fierce clash. The Nigerian Army’s response was swift and robust, forcing the terrorists to flee the area.

Nigerian Army’s Raid on Bandits’ Hideouts in Kagarko, Kaduna
In a separate development, over 100 troops reportedly conducted an operation in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna.
The target of this operation was bandits who had fled from the far north and were attempting to set up camp around villages in Kagarko.
The troops successfully raided the bandits’ hideouts, prompting them to escape into the forest.
Confirmation by Nigerian Army Spokesperson
Nigerian Army spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, confirmed the Kagarko operation and dispelled rumors of any informant arrests.
He asserted that the troops carried out the operation as part of their ongoing efforts to combat insurgency and restore security in the region.
