Ifunanya Nwangene dies at 26 after deadly snake bite cuts short the rising music career of The Voice Nigeria star in Abuja

The music world is reeling after the heartbreaking news that Ifunanya Nwangene, a gifted vocalist and former contestant on The Voice Nigeria Season 3, has passed away at just 26.

The Enugu-born soprano, who also pursued a career as an architect, tragically died following a snake bite while at her home in Abuja.

A Life Marked by Talent

Ifunanya first captured public attention in April 2021 when her heartfelt rendition of Rihanna’s Take A Bow went viral on YouTube, racking up over 85,000 views.

Beyond her solo work, she was an active member of the Amemuso Choir, where her voice and passion left a lasting impression on both her peers and fans.

Sam Ezugwu, the choir’s music director, confirmed the devastating news on Facebook, writing, “With painful heart, we announce the death of Ifunanya Nwangene Nanyah.”

He added that Ifunanya “was on the cusp of sharing her incredible talent with the world” and that her voice and spirit would be sorely missed.

The Tragic Incident

According to Hillary Obinna, another choir member, the snake bite occurred while Ifunanya was asleep, waking her suddenly.

Two snakes were later recovered from her home.

She initially sought help at a local clinic, but they reportedly did not have the anti-venom she needed.

She was then taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Jabi.

Ezugwu shared with BBC Africa that during her time at the hospital, Ifunanya could not speak but communicated through hand gestures and struggled to breathe.

Despite the desperate efforts of medical staff, she could not be saved.

Conflicting Reports on Medical Care

The hospital released a statement disputing claims that anti-venom was unavailable.

They stated that their team provided immediate and appropriate treatment, including resuscitation, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and polyvalent snake antivenom.

According to the hospital, a rapid but thorough examination revealed severe complications from the bite, and the medical team was unfortunately unable to revive her.

Remembering Ifunanya

Friends and colleagues remember Ifunanya as humble, intelligent, and incredibly talented.

Obinna said, “Everybody is shattered. We could not sleep at night. She was a very wonderful girl.”

Her sudden death has left a mourning community behind, all grappling with the senseless loss of such a bright young life.

Her YouTube channel showcased covers of major hits, including Rihanna’s Lift Me Up, Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On, and Miley Cyrus’s Slide Away.

Interacting with fans under her handle @Nanyahmusic, she often expressed gratitude for their encouragement.

One fan comment on her Rihanna cover prompted her to respond, “I appreciate all the comments. I’m encouraged, and I will keep improving. Thank you everyone!”

A Legacy That Will Live On

Though her life was tragically cut short, Ifunanya’s music and the joy she brought to those around her continue to resonate.

Her story serves as a stark reminder of both the fragility of life and the enduring power of art to touch hearts, even after we are gone.
