President Tinubu Initiates Probe on Explosive Control Violations, Forms Presidential Committee to Scrutinize Ibadan Explosion’s Root Causes

Presidential Committee Formed to Investigate Ibadan Explosions

In the aftermath of the tragic explosions in the Bodija area of Ibadan, President Bola Tinubu has taken decisive action by directing the establishment of a presidential committee.

This committee is tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation into potential violations of explosive control laws in the country.

The explosions, which occurred on Tuesday night, led to the loss of two lives, injuries to around 80 individuals, and extensive damage to numerous buildings, vehicles, and properties in the capital of Oyo State.

Minister of Defence Discloses Council’s Mandate

The Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, revealed the presidential directive to State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting overseen by President Tinubu in Abuja.

Minister Badaru disclosed that the council has mandated an immediate investigation to determine the precise cause of the unfortunate explosion in Ibadan.

Multiple Reports Prompting Investigation

Responding to inquiries, Minister Badaru highlighted conflicting reports on the incident, with some suggesting explosives owned by illegal miners and others indicating a gas explosion.

He confirmed the presence of a team at the site working to uncover the root cause. The council’s decision to set up a committee aims to examine potential violations of explosive control laws, ensuring a thorough investigation into the incident.

Examining the Control of Explosive Law

Minister Badaru clarified the committee’s focus on scrutinizing the control of explosive law and determining whether there were violations leading to the tragic explosion.

He emphasized the need to identify any breakdown in the strict laws governing the movement, storage, and ownership of explosives, with a commitment to addressing and rectifying any issues found.

Strict Monitoring and National Implications

Highlighting the existing strict laws regarding explosives, Minister Badaru assured that the movement, storage, and ownership of explosives are under continuous monitoring.

Any identified breakdown in adherence to these laws will be thoroughly investigated and addressed by the committee.

The broader implication is the need to ascertain if similar incidents are occurring across the country, further emphasizing the urgency and significance of the presidential committee’s work.
