The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq has applauded the rapid achievements of the National Commission for Persons with Disability within the short period of its establishment.
Farouq gave the commendation when she paid a familiarity visit to the Commission ahead of the World Disability day Summit in Abuja.
“I am indeed delighted to be here to witness the drastic developments that have taken place in the last one year in the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities.
My joy is growing by the day as I see the Commission being nurtured through the stages of growth to fulfilling its mandate.
The Minister said the effort was in recognition of the promise made by President Muhammadu Buhari to take 100 million extremely poor Nigerians out of poverty which includes Persons with disabilities.
“As the vision of Mr President is increasingly being crystalized, over Thirty-One million persons with disabilities are beginning to have the visibility and the inclusivity that the community has long yearned for.
The Minister commissioned some projects executed by the Commission.
The projects are: Two Operational Vehicles for the Commission to improve mobility and productivity, the National Disability Electronic Certificate production centre in compliance with; the Mini Braille printing centre, the National Disability Data Processing centre and the beautiful and accessible office complex
She noted with optimism that as operations commence with the new projects, there’s hope for better data collection, more dignified access to services and accessibility to government print information, policies and other instruments for the Blind.
“By these, hope is being rekindled in the disability community about their identity and the protection of the rights of Persons with Disability against any form of discrimination or abuse.
She also assured the staff that the Ministry was working tirelessly with the Head of Civil Service of the Federation to facilitate timely access to the waiver for employment into the Commission to complement their efforts.
Responding, the Executive Secretary, James Lalu said that the achievements wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Minister and President Muhammadu Buhari.
