A tragic case in Houston culminated in a 40-year prison sentence for Erika Miranda-Alvarez, 35, who admitted to murdering her friend, Carolina Flores, 33, in a gruesome scheme to abduct Flores’ six-week-old baby.
The incident occurred in 2017, and the verdict was delivered this week.
The Plot Unfolds
Miranda-Alvarez and Flores had been friends for several years, sharing the experience of being pregnant simultaneously.
However, Miranda-Alvarez suffered a miscarriage, which she concealed from Flores. She fabricated a story about giving birth, setting the stage for her plan to steal Flores’ baby.
The Crime and Its Aftermath
On December 19, 2017, family members discovered Flores’ lifeless body in her apartment and quickly realized her baby was missing.
Authorities launched a massive two-day search, issuing an AMBER Alert. The baby was eventually found unharmed in Miranda-Alvarez’s apartment.
A SWAT team breached the residence to rescue the child and apprehend Miranda-Alvarez.

Inside Miranda-Alvarez’s home, authorities found two hospital wristbands—one belonging to Carolina Flores and the other to her baby, Shamali Flores.
Miranda-Alvarez claimed she found Flores dead and took the baby, but prosecutors dismissed this narrative, emphasizing her premeditated actions, including the disposal of Flores’ cellphone in a toilet tank.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
Facing an insanity defense from Miranda-Alvarez, prosecutors offered a plea deal to ensure she would spend decades in prison.
Harris County Assistant District Attorney Casey Smith highlighted that Miranda-Alvarez was aware of her wrongdoing, as evidenced by her actions and statements.

The sentencing was attended by Flores’ family, who had been waiting for justice. Flores’ brother, Juan Martinez-Miranda, expressed the family’s profound grief and mixed emotions over his sister’s tragic death.
