In a heartfelt move to recognize the sacrifices of Nigeria’s military personnel, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has demonstrated his commitment to the welfare of servicemen, veterans, and families of fallen heroes.
Ahead of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the governor made significant contributions to the State Council of the Nigerian Legion, signaling the state’s continued support for those who safeguard Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Tangible Support for the Nigerian Legion
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s donations included a substantial N100 million cash contribution, four two-bedroom apartments in Ajara, and two pick-up utility vehicles to the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion.
Beyond housing and vehicles, he also provided four cows, 500 bags of rice, and assorted food items, reflecting a broad commitment to the well-being of Legion members and the families of those who have given their lives in service.
Upholding the Tradition of Remembrance
Speaking at the State Executive Council meeting on Monday during the launch of the Year 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem, the governor emphasized that remembering fallen heroes is not just symbolic—it is a constitutional duty.
He highlighted that the Emblem Appeal has become a cherished tradition in Nigeria, honoring those who sacrificed their lives and those who returned home with life-altering injuries.
“It is our responsibility to support the Nigerian Legion, Lagos State Council, in showing gratitude to the brave men and women who have protected the sovereignty of Nigeria,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated.
“This is our way of saying thank you for the sacrifices that allow all of us to live in a free and united country.”
Appreciation from the Nigerian Legion
The Commandant of the Lagos Council of the Nigerian Legion, Akeem Wolimoh, expressed profound gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu and the state government for their consistent support.
He explained that past contributions have helped improve the living conditions of Legion members, while dependents have benefited from skill acquisition programs and other empowerment initiatives run by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and other state agencies.
