George man shot in the head and left on the pavement

Following the death of a man in Thembalethu on Friday evening, George police are investigating a murder.

On Friday, March 18th, about 21:40, a fatal shooting occurred in Zone 6, Thembalethu.

ON FRIDAY, A MAN WAS SHOT AND KILLED.

The victim was found with a gunshot wound to the head, according to police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies.

“When members arrived in Silvertown, they discovered the victim lying on the pavement with a gunshot wound to the head.” “Paramedics on the spot declared him dead,” Spies added.

He furthermore said the circumstances surrounding the murder is under investigation.

“The motive for the killing is yet to be established and forms part of the ongoing police probe. A post-mortem to determine the cause of death will be conducted during the upcoming week.”

Meanwhile, a 53-year-old George police officer was arrested for tampering with evidence connected to a business robbery.

THE POLICE OFFICER IS A CAPTAIN

According to Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani the officer attached at Thembalethu SAPS was arrested on Friday, 18 March 2022. He was arrested for tampering with evidence in connection to a business robbery at Puma garage in Thembalethu, George, on 31 January 2022.

“This comes after a search and seizure operation that was steered by the  Hawks’ team in the office of the suspect that led to the discovery of empty cartridges that were removed from the crime scene.

“It is reported that on the day of the business robbery, a shootout ensued between the police and the suspects,” Hani said.

THE ROBBERY HAPPENED EARLIER THIS YEAR

The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team arrested the police officer after the team determined that he had removed evidence from the scene.

Hani said the police officer, who is a Captain, is being held in custody.

He is scheduled to make his first appearance in the Thembalethu Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 22 March 2022.

THE POLICE OFFICER REMOVED EVIDENCE FROM THE SCENE

The police officer faces a charge of defeating the ends of justice.
