Gayton McKenzie Shares Heartfelt Message of Support for Disgraced Springbok Elton Jantjies Following Controversial Past

Former Springbok flyhalf Elton Jantjies has faced a turbulent few years, from a doping ban to accusations of an extramarital affair and domestic abuse. However, he is not facing his challenges alone.

Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has stepped forward with a message of encouragement for the embattled rugby star.

A Shared History of Overcoming Adversity

Both Gayton McKenzie and Elton Jantjies have endured their own public battles.

McKenzie himself has a troubled past, which included serving a 10-year sentence for armed robbery.

This history of overcoming adversity made him the perfect person to offer support to Jantjies, who has experienced significant struggles in recent years.

In a heartfelt video posted on Elton’s Instagram, McKenzie expressed his admiration for the former rugby player’s current efforts. “Congratulations, I am proud of you,” McKenzie said.

“I can see what you do for rugby and how hard you work for The Game Changers.”

McKenzie went on to encourage Elton to ignore his critics. “Forget the naysayers,” he said.

“You keep fighting. I’m behind you. Let me know if you need some help, I’m available.”

Elton Responds with Gratitude

Elton Jantjies responded to McKenzie’s supportive words in a separate video, expressing his gratitude.

“I’ve always wanted to change lives using rugby,” Jantjies said.

“That’s what God wants me to do—through being an example and speaking through actions.”

The message was shared with the caption: “A message from a true leader,” as Elton thanked McKenzie for offering him hope during such a challenging time.

What’s Next for Elton Jantjies?

Despite the doping ban that will keep him out of professional rugby until at least 2028, Elton Jantjies is determined to make a comeback.

He discussed his intentions on the Behind The Ruck podcast in January 2025, where he revealed that his career is far from over.

In 2023, Jantjies tested positive for Clenbuterol, a banned substance, which led to the four-year suspension from the South African Institute of Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS).

Despite this setback, Jantjies firmly believes in his return to the sport, stating, “200%… soon,” when asked about his professional future.

A New Venture into Rugby Coaching

In the meantime, Elton has shifted his focus to rugby coaching, founding The Game Changers company.

Through this platform, he offers individualized coaching to both professional and amateur players, a service he claims has “never been done before.”

While his playing days with the Springboks might be on hold, Jantjies is still very much involved in shaping the next generation of rugby talent.

Will Elton Jantjies Make His Return?

Only time will tell if Jantjies can regain his place in the Springboks. With McKenzie’s support and his own determination, there may yet be another chapter in his rugby career.
