Gautrain launches KlevaMova initiative to cut train fares in half and lower parking fees across Gauteng

If you’ve been feeling the pinch of rising transport costs in Gauteng, here’s some good news that might make your wallet breathe a little easier.

The Gautrain is stepping up with a brand-new initiative called KlevaMova, aimed at making public transport more budget-friendly and inclusive for everyday South Africans.

What’s the Deal with KlevaMova?

Launched by Gauteng’s MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, KlevaMova offers a massive 50% discount on train fares for qualifying passengers.

That’s not all—if you’re parking your car at a Gautrain station before hopping on a train, you’ll only pay R1 per day for parking between 1 April and 31 July 2025.

It’s part of a bigger plan to get more people using efficient, reliable public transport while cutting down on the financial pressure of daily commuting.

Who Can Get the Discount?

The discount is open to several groups of people.

You could qualify if:

  • You’re part of a household earning R350,000 or less per year

  • You’re a student under the age of 25

  • You’re a school learner

  • You’re a pensioner

  • Or you receive a SASSA disability grant

If you tick any of those boxes, you can apply to receive discounted rates on Weekly, Monthly, and Return tickets for Gautrain trains.

Here’s How to Apply

Getting started is simple. You’ll need to submit an application and some documents for verification.

If approved, you’ll start enjoying reduced fares.

You can apply in a few ways:

  • Call the toll-free Gautrain line at 0800 428 87246 (that’s 0800 GAUTRAIN)

  • Visit www.gautrain.co.za

  • Stop by any Gautrain station (except OR Tambo) from Monday to Saturday, between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM

Why This Matters More Than Ever

Diale-Tlabela explained that transport shouldn’t be a luxury, especially when it comes to accessing work, education, and healthcare.

Nearly 60% of households in Gauteng are spending more than 10% of their income on transport—mostly due to the long travel distances caused by apartheid-era town planning.

KlevaMova is the government’s response to this reality.

It’s about making public transport work for everyone, not just those who live near city centres or have the means to pay high fares.

Part of a Bigger Vision

This initiative is aligned with Gauteng’s 25-Year Integrated Transport Master Plan (ITMP25), which prioritises rail as the backbone of a smarter, greener, and more efficient transport system.

Beyond saving money, Gautrain hopes KlevaMova will also:

  • Reduce traffic congestion on the roads

  • Ease daily travel stress

  • Cut carbon emissions

  • Support greater economic participation across communities

Your Move: Do You Qualify?

If you use the Gautrain—or you’ve been meaning to but the cost held you back—this could be the perfect time to hop on board.
