Being a parent of children in Gauteng is no easy feat. Getting successfully through Gauteng school registration has long been a struggle year in and year out. Now, the Gauteng Department of Education has revealed that all Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners have been placed at schools.
Gauteng school registration: 2022 gets the all clear for key grades
The Department says that all learners from those grades who applied through the online admissions system, have been placed.
Close to 350 000 learners applied for placements in Grade 1 and 8. But not all of the applicants had correctly submitted all the necessary documents.
“We received a total of 347 216 applications under the 2022 Online Admissions for Grade 1 and 8. From this figure, 321 768 applicants had submitted their proof of residence and other required documentation to enable the department to facilitate their placements. As a result, a total of 129 779 Grade 1 learners and 191 989 Grade 8 learners were successfully placed.”
Steve Mabona, Gauteng Education Spokesperson
Late applications only opened on the 12th of January. More than 25 400 learners have already been placed.
It’s not all good news though. Hundreds of parents are still waiting to hear back about space for their children for Grades 2-7 and 9-11. The department is urging parents with issues to visit their district education department offices.
Online application system in trouble?
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi is now asking his department to begin a review of the online application system. The Gauteng school registration online system has come under fire from parents. Hundreds have complained over the last few years about where their children are placed.
Lesufi says he wants these concerns addressed. The review is set to be completed before the new round of registrations opens for the next school year.
