…By Larry John for TDPel Media. Match of the Day host Gary Lineker appeared on Good Morning Britain (GMB) to promote the new series of his game show, Sitting On A Fortune.
However, instead of discussing his show, Richard Madeley decided to grill Lineker about a tweet he posted earlier this year, which led to Lineker being taken off air.
In the tweet, Lineker had commented on the language used by the Conservatives regarding immigration, drawing a comparison to language used in Germany in the 1930s.
The BBC criticized Lineker for his perceived lack of impartiality and suspended him during an investigation.
He was later reinstated after numerous colleagues from the sports industry and journalism sector showed support by walking out.
During his appearance on GMB, Richard Madeley accused Lineker of likening the government to Nazis and questioned whether he would make the same statement again.
Lineker defended his tweet, stating that it had been taken out of context or misquoted previously, and accused Madeley of doing the same during the GMB interview.
Tensions rose between the two as Madeley continued to probe Lineker about his stance and views on the matter.
Following the contentious GMB interview, which received criticism from some viewers, Lineker appeared on Radio X with Chris Moyles.
When asked about his day so far, Lineker referred to the interview with Madeley, likening him to the fictional character Alan Partridge, and implied that he was familiar with Madeley’s interviewing style.
Lineker concluded by saying that the interview was “fine.”
Despite the interview’s controversy, Lineker proceeded with his day, engaging in subsequent media appearances and carrying on with his professional commitments.
