In a tragic incident at the Dinokeng Game Reserve in Gauteng, South Africa, a 30-year-old game park employee named Johannes Matshe was mauled to death by lions during a night-time stroll.
The gruesome incident took place on Sunday night, and the victim’s remains were discovered the following morning by another employee.

Reserve spokesperson Hartogh Streicher expressed condolences to Matshe’s family while emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety rules within the reserve.
Streicher stated that wandering the reserve after sunset is strictly prohibited due to the nocturnal behavior of lions, who might perceive humans as prey.
He highlighted the natural instincts of lions and the dangers posed by such encounters.

Following the tragic incident, the reserve has sought expert advice on how to handle the lion responsible for the attack.
The fate of the lion in question has not been determined, and the reserve is committed to making responsible decisions that ensure the safety of all parties involved.
Preventing Future Tragedies
Streicher concluded his statement with a heartfelt plea to landowners, urging them to remain vigilant about the safety of their gamekeepers and visitors.
He emphasized the importance of reporting any breaches of safety rules to prevent such harrowing incidents from recurring.
Investigation Underway
Hammanskraal state police, led by Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, have taken charge of the investigation into the circumstances that led to Matshe’s fatal encounter with the lions.
Authorities are working to understand how and why Matshe entered the reserve alone at night.
Not the First Tragedy
This is not the first time that Dinokeng Game Reserve has witnessed such a horrifying incident.
In 2018, a 22-year-old woman suffered a similar fate when she was attacked and killed by a lion.
The reserve management clarified that this attack occurred within a restricted conservation zone, inaccessible to the general public, and involved a lion not part of the reserve’s population of wild, free-roaming lions.
