Funke Akindele Breaks Nigerian Box Office Records With Behind The Scenes Earning Over ₦1.77 Billion Across West Africa

Nollywood powerhouse Funke Akindele has done it again.

Her latest film, Behind The Scenes, has raked in an impressive ₦1.77 billion at the Nigerian box office, cementing her position as one of the country’s most commercially successful filmmakers.

The news comes straight from the film’s distributor, FilmOne Entertainment, who shared the milestone on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.

“Celebrating yet another incredible milestone…we’re so sure we wouldn’t have done this without you and your love,” FilmOne wrote.

Behind The Scenes hits a whopping ₦1.77 billion. Thank you to everyone for the love and support so far.”

Breaking Records in West Africa

The film has officially become the number one movie of the weekend across West Africa, with verified earnings totaling ₦1,767,305,878 as of 4 pm on January 5, 2025.

FilmOne’s announcement celebrated the achievement, writing, “THANK YOU WEST AFRICA. NO.1 FILM OF THE WEEKEND… AND COUNTING.”

Box office watchers have noted that these figures continue to grow, underlining the ongoing popularity of the film and Akindele’s star power.

A Star-Studded Cast

Behind The Scenes features Scarlet Gomez in the lead role, supported by an ensemble cast that includes Funke Akindele herself, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Uche Montana, Uzor Arukwe, Ini Dima-Okojie, Adebowale ‘Mr Macaroni’, Ibrahim Chatta, Kamo State, as well as reality stars Handi and Wanni Danbaki.

The film’s storyline explores the social and financial pressures of black tax—the expectation for individuals to support extended family members—resonating strongly with audiences across Nigeria and the West African region.

Crossing Major Milestones

This latest success adds to a growing list of Akindele’s box office triumphs.

Behind The Scenes had previously surpassed ₦1 billion, hitting ₦1,109,463,846 and placing it among the highest-grossing Nollywood films ever.

FilmOne highlighted Akindele’s exceptional track record, calling her “the only director to cross ₦1B+ at the box office three different times” and Nollywood’s “highest-grossing producer of all time.”

A Proven Formula for Success

Funke Akindele’s earlier hits illustrate her consistent ability to draw audiences.

Her film Everybody Loves Jenifa reportedly earned over ₦40 million on its opening day, crossed ₦355 million in its first week, surpassed ₦700 million by its second weekend, and became the fastest Nollywood movie to hit ₦1 billion domestically.

Industry analysts suggest that the continued success of Behind The Scenes is no accident.

A mix of relatable storytelling, clever marketing strategies, and Akindele’s lasting appeal with mainstream audiences has helped the film maintain a strong run in cinemas.

Nollywood’s Box Office Queen

With Behind The Scenes still performing strongly in theaters, Funke Akindele’s position as a top-tier filmmaker remains unchallenged.

Her ability to consistently deliver hits underscores her understanding of what resonates with Nigerian and West African audiences, solidifying her legacy as one of Nollywood’s most influential figures.
