The 23-year-old student disappeared after attending a house party in Hotwells, Bristol, on March 2.
Recently, Avon and Somerset Police had to halt their search in an ‘area of interest’ due to a lack of resources.
This has prompted Jack’s mother, Catherine O’Sullivan, to take matters into her own hands, hiring private detectives and specialized search dogs to cover the potential path her son may have taken on his way home.
Frustration with Police Response
Catherine had previously alerted the police to a location along the busy A370 where the search dogs had shown signs of agitation, suggesting it might be significant.
After a week of waiting for a response, officers finally conducted a search, only to leave prematurely due to their limited resources.
“It’s totally unacceptable,” Catherine expressed.
“It feels like torture. They seem to think there are more pressing matters to attend to.”
The family is left feeling that their son isn’t a priority for the police, despite their reassurances.
Jack’s Last Known Movements
Jack’s last confirmed movements paint a troubling picture.
He was last seen leaving a party alone shortly before 3 a.m. on March 2.
His last text to his mother at 1:52 a.m. indicated he was safe and getting an Uber home.
However, shortly after, he encountered a minor altercation after tripping down the stairs at the party.
While he attempted to contact a friend still at the party around 3:24 a.m., the call ended abruptly, leaving his family anxious and desperate for answers.
CCTV footage shows him at various points that night, but what happened in the hours that followed remains a mystery.
Concerns Over Police Focus
Catherine is increasingly frustrated by the police’s apparent focus on the theory that Jack may have fallen into the water on his way home.
She believes that this narrative has dominated their investigation to the detriment of exploring other possibilities.
“If he had gone into the water, experienced divers would have found him by now,” she argued, pointing out that many items have been discovered in the water, but nothing belonging to Jack.
Seeking Justice and Answers
Feeling that she has lost trust in the police, Catherine has taken proactive steps to ensure her son’s case does not fall through the cracks.
She is now working with a specialist dog search team and pushing for access to crucial phone and data records, which she feels have been overlooked.
“We can’t leave anything to chance,” she insists.
“We have to investigate every possible sighting ourselves, as we’re not confident the police are doing it.”
Community Support and Ongoing Efforts
Despite the challenges, the O’Sullivan family has found immense support from the community.
People have rallied to help with searches, sharing information and tips, as well as offering emotional support.
“The generosity and kindness of the community have been overwhelming,” Catherine said.
“While I feel a sense of urgency to spread awareness beyond Bristol, it’s a delicate balance.
We’re not trying to undermine the police; we just need to keep Jack’s name out there.”
Police Commitment to the Investigation
In response to the family’s concerns, Avon and Somerset Police have stated that they have dedicated significant resources to the investigation, with over 20 teams involved and extensive reviews of CCTV and search efforts.
Assistant Chief Constable Joanne Hall reassured the family, “We remain committed to doing everything we can to find Jack.”
Yet, the family still feels a sense of urgency and concern over the adequacy of the police response.
Moving Forward
As the family continues to search for Jack, they remain determined to uncover the truth.
Catherine’s belief that her son is still alive fuels her relentless efforts.
“I won’t accept that he’s not here until I have evidence,” she said firmly.
