Four years after losing her husband, PC Andrew Harper, in a devastating incident while on duty, Lissie Harper has found love once again.
PC Harper, 28, tragically lost his life in August 2019, leaving his widow to carry on his memory while tirelessly advocating for stronger laws in his honor.
Today, Lissie Harper was honored for her work supporting victims of violent crime, receiving an MBE at Windsor Castle, accompanied by her parents and her new partner, Dan Terry, an emergency worker.
Despite their decision to keep their relationship out of the public eye, their appearance together marked a poignant moment for Harper.
Embracing Life Again
In a candid conversation on The Stigma of Grief podcast, Lissie opened up about the pressures of grieving in the public eye and her decision to embrace life and love once more.
She highlighted the expectations placed on grieving widows, expressing her belief that life after loss doesn’t mandate perpetual mourning.
She reflected, “There’s this expectation to be this figure, the grieving widow… It’s not sustainable… and it’s not fair. It’s normal to feel scared and wonder if you’re doing the right thing.”
Navigating a New Beginning
Describing her initial dates with Dan Terry as “strange,” Lissie acknowledged the transformative effect of loss, saying, “You become a different person when you go through something like this.”
Her husband’s tragic death occurred just hours before they were to start their honeymoon, leaving a profound impact on her life.
She spearheaded the campaign for Harper’s Law, aimed at ensuring tougher sentences for those who harm emergency workers.
This law became a reality last June, a testament to her unwavering dedication.
Recognition and Honors
Alongside her journey, other notable individuals received recognition.
Actress Vicky McClure, known for her roles in Line of Duty and her charity work, was honored with an MBE.
Meanwhile, Conservative MP Michael Fabricant, with over three decades in politics, was knighted, signifying his long-standing contributions.
