Fremont, California, Named Best City to Raise a Family in 2024 by WalletHub Study

Fremont, California, has been recognized as the top city in the United States to raise a family in 2024, according to a recent study by the personal finance website WalletHub.

Known for its robust manufacturing history, Fremont now stands out for its family-friendly environment, making it a prime choice for families seeking stability and quality of life.

Comprehensive Analysis

WalletHub’s analysis evaluated more than 180 U.S. cities based on 45 key metrics, including housing costs, quality of local schools, healthcare systems, and average household income.

The study also considered safety and the availability of family-friendly activities and entertainment options.

Economic Strengths

Fremont’s top ranking is largely attributed to its strong economic factors.

The city boasts one of the highest median family incomes in the country, adjusted for the cost of living, at nearly $122,000.

It also has the fourth-lowest share of families living in poverty and the third-lowest share receiving food stamps.

These economic indicators contribute significantly to its appeal as a family-friendly city.

Community and Education

The city is home to around 230,000 people and has a high rate of families with children under 18, at 50.5%. Fremont’s public schools are highly rated, and the city offers a substantial number of parkland acres per capita.

These factors, combined with a low percentage of children lacking health insurance (1.4%) and minimal lack of access to healthy food (1.1%), underscore Fremont’s suitability for families.

Historical Significance

Located near Silicon Valley in the Bay Area, Fremont has played a pivotal role in the region’s technological boom.

The city has a rich history in manufacturing, with Apple and Steve Jobs choosing Fremont for their first manufacturing site in 1984.

The automotive industry has also been significant, with millions of trucks and cars produced in Fremont since the 1960s. Today, over 900 advanced manufacturing companies operate in the city.

Other Top Cities

Following Fremont, Overland Park, Kansas, was ranked as the second-best city to raise a family.

Known for its low unemployment rate (2.4%) and high median family income (over $140,000 after adjusting for the cost of living), Overland Park also boasts a low separation and divorce rate and a high percentage of two-parent families.

Irvine, California, ranked third due to its low crime rate and highly-rated schools.

Despite being one of the most affluent cities in the U.S., with average home prices exceeding $1 million, it remains an attractive option for families.

Plano, Texas, placed fourth, offering affordability, health, and safety. Seattle, Washington, ranked fifth, also excelling in affordability and health and safety metrics.

Challenges for Other Cities

At the other end of the spectrum, Memphis, Tennessee, received the lowest ranking. The city struggled with education and childcare and had the highest rate of violent crime per capita.

Detroit, Michigan, also ranked low due to its low median family salary (adjusted for cost of living) and high poverty rate, despite having a high number of playgrounds per capita.

Expert Insights

Cassandra Happe, a WalletHub analyst, highlighted the complexities families face when choosing a place to live.

Balancing affordability, education, safety, and recreation, while also considering proximity to extended family, is challenging.

“Current or prospective parents can benefit from narrowing down their choices to a few of the best cities that are within a reasonable drive of their family,” she advised.

Fremont, California, has emerged as the best city to raise a family in 2024, thanks to its strong economic indicators, quality education, and family-friendly environment.

As families navigate the challenges of modern living, cities like Fremont offer a compelling blend of opportunities and stability, making them ideal choices for raising children.
