Four South African Soldiers Tragically Killed in Violent Clash with M23 Rebels in Goma DRC

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has confirmed the tragic deaths of four soldiers during a confrontation with the M23 rebel group in Goma, located in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

This adds to the mounting toll of SANDF personnel lost in recent skirmishes with the militia.

Nine SANDF Soldiers Die in Fierce Two-Day Clash

Over the weekend, SANDF revealed that nine soldiers had been killed during a violent, two-day clash with the M23 rebels in the same region.

The situation remains tense as peacekeeping forces continue their efforts amidst the ongoing conflict.

Details of the Fatalities in Goma

On Tuesday, SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini provided further details on the tragic events.

During an exchange of mortar bombs between the Congolese Defence Forces (FARDC) and the M23 rebels on January 27, three SANDF members were caught in the crossfire near Goma Airport, where the SANDF base is located.

These soldiers tragically lost their lives as a result of the attack.

Further Losses and Injuries

Dlamini also confirmed that another SANDF member who had been wounded earlier in the battle against the M23 rebels succumbed to their injuries.

The remaining injured soldiers are receiving medical care at the Level 3 Hospital in Goma.

Commitment to Peacekeeping Efforts

Despite the tragic losses, Dlamini emphasized the SANDF’s unwavering commitment to its peacekeeping duties under the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) and the Southern African Development Community Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC).

He praised the courage and resolve of the soldiers who continue to pursue peace and stability in the region.

Minister Motshekga Offers Condolences

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga, extended her heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, as well as to the entire SANDF community.

Their dedication to peace and security in the region remains steadfast, despite the devastating challenges.
