Four police officers have been arrested on charges of corruption in Cape Town.

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk says a 27-year-old constable stationed at the Belhar Police Station was arrested after he took a bribe from a suspect who was under arrest for the possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Van Wyk says two constables and a sergeant, stationed at the Lwandle Police Station, were arrested on Thursday after asking a suspect to pay them in order to evade arrest.

“The Anti-Corruption Unit arrested a police sergeant and two constables between the ages of 23 and 35 stationed at Lwandle Police Station on charges of corruption and defeating the administration of justice yesterday afternoon. It is alleged the police members searched a premises where dagga was found and asked the suspect to pay an amount of money in order not be arrested. The members took three bankies of dagga and left the rest with the suspect.”

In February, six suspects including two police officers were arrested in Pretoria for conspiracy to commit a robbery.
They faced various charges which include attempted murder, conspiracy to commit robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of stolen cars and police impersonation.
Police spokesperson Philani Nkwalase says a multi-disciplinary law enforcement team acted on information about a syndicate allegedly linked to a series of armed robberies in Gauteng.
Nkwalase said the six were allegedly about to commit a robbery in Hatfield when police spotted them and a chase ensued.
“A police constable attached to Gauteng Crime intelligence was arrested along with two other occupants. One of the civilians, wearing a full police uniform, sustained a gunshot wound and was rushed to hospital. Additionally, fake Hawks regalia was also seized during the arrest. Another constable, also from crime intelligence was also linked to the syndicate and arrested. She was in possession of a Nissan from crime intelligence fitted with fake registration.”
