In a new move to make in-vitro fertilization (IVF) more affordable, former President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday.
This decision was made from his residence at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, and it focuses on reducing the financial burden of IVF treatments, which can often cost tens of thousands of dollars per cycle.
A Promise to Lower Costs
Trump’s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, explained that the executive order aims to aggressively lower out-of-pocket costs for IVF procedures.
Leavitt expressed her enthusiasm on X, stating, “PROMISES MADE. PROMISES KEPT: President Trump just signed an Executive Order to Expand Access to IVF!” According to her, the order directs policy recommendations that aim to protect IVF access and reduce both out-of-pocket and insurance plan costs for these treatments.
Trump’s Self-Claimed Title as the “Father of IVF”
In a rather unusual statement during the campaign trail, Trump referred to himself as the “father of IVF.
” During a Fox News town hall, he proudly declared, “We really are the party for IVF,” and even went as far as to say, “I’m the father of IVF.
” This comment caught attention, but it also underscored his focus on the issue of reproductive health and fertility treatments.
Addressing the Affordability of IVF
The executive order was created due to the rising costs of IVF, which can reach $25,000 or more per cycle, making it out of reach for many families.
Trump’s staff secretary, Will Scharf, pointed out that IVF had become “unaffordable” for many Americans, which prompted the decision to take action.
The order will direct the Domestic Policy Council to explore ways to make IVF and other fertility treatments more accessible financially for a broader group of people.
Trump’s Evolving Stance on Reproductive Health
Throughout his political career, Trump has taken a variety of positions on reproductive health, trying to balance his appeal to both evangelical Republicans and women voters.
In the past, he promised to push for government-funded IVF treatments, a pledge that received mixed reactions from the conservative right.
