Politics in Abia State is heating up as local stakeholders rally around the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a recent event in Umuahia, former lawmaker and Abia Central Senatorial District representative, Senator Chris Adighije, shared his optimism about the future of Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.
Confidence in Tinubu’s Leadership
Speaking to supporters, Adighije expressed confidence that the country is on the right track.
He highlighted improvements in key areas like food and fuel prices, saying that if Tinubu continues his current policies for another four years, Nigeria will see even greater progress.
“The president seems to understand Nigeria better than most of us,” Adighije said.
“Food prices are starting to come down, fuel is becoming more affordable, and if he stays on this path, Nigeria will improve significantly.
That’s why we’re calling on Ikwuano and Umuahia South residents to support APC in the next elections.”
Clarifying the Party’s Democratic Stance
Amid concerns about the possibility of a one-party system, Adighije made it clear that APC does not support such a structure.
“We are a democratic party and believe in giving the opposition a fair chance,” he said.
“Nigeria will not become a one-party country.
But if other politicians choose to join us, that’s their decision.
Our focus remains on democracy, not monopolizing power.”
He also referenced President Tinubu’s analogy, saying, “You cannot ask a man seeing a sinking ship not to jump out.
We respect democracy, and that’s the principle guiding our party.”
Open Door for Abia State
On the question of whether Abia State might formally align with APC, Adighije remained open-minded.
“Abia and Anambra haven’t moved to APC yet, but tomorrow is another day,” he explained.
“We are democratic. If leaders in these states choose to join, they are welcome.”
Taking on a New Role in Local Politics
During the ceremony, Adighije was appointed as the Patron of the Ikwuano/Umuahia Initiative, a pro-APC group led by Chief Ako Atuloma.
Accepting the role, he reflected on the importance of grassroots political organization.
“I never imagined I would be in this position,” he said.
“Ikwuano and Umuahia are crucial for balancing power in Abia State.
As Patron, I will guide leadership and offer advice, ensuring that decisions are grounded in the needs of the people.”
Streamlining Politics Ahead of 2027
Chief Ako Atuloma, the group’s convener, explained that the initiative aims to organize political activities in the two local government areas ahead of the next general election.
“We’ve appointed Senator Adighije as our patron to ensure proper structure and accountability,” Atuloma said. “Gone are the days when politicians simply bought nominations.
Now, we identify candidates, support them, and hold them responsible to the people.”
