Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Farouk Khan criticises Amakhosi performances after narrow wins in South Africa and Zambia

Kaizer Chiefs might be stacking up results, but not everyone is impressed by how those victories are coming.

Former Amakhosi assistant coach Farouk Khan has taken a sharp look at Chiefs’ recent outings and isn’t buying into the growing optimism.

Despite two consecutive 1–0 wins, he believes the performances have left plenty to be desired.

Narrow Wins, Big Questions

Chiefs recently edged Golden Arrows in a midweek DStv Premiership clash before grinding out another slim victory against Zesco United in Zambia in the CAF Confederation Cup.

In both matches, an early breakthrough proved decisive.

While the points were secured, Khan feels the overall display didn’t live up to the club’s reputation or expectations.

“Results Alone Are Not Enough”

Speaking on Soccer Beat, Khan was clear that Kaizer Chiefs should be about more than just scraping wins.

According to him, the Soweto giants owe their supporters a style of football that excites and sparks conversation long after the final whistle.

He painted a vivid picture of what he believes Chiefs football should look like — the kind that has fans chatting animatedly on trains and in taxis the next morning, replaying moments of brilliance and individual flair.

Fans Want to Feel Inspired

From Khan’s perspective, supporters don’t just want to see three points on the board.

They want to feel something when they watch their team play.

He argued that entertainment and inspiration are part of the club’s identity and history, and those elements seem to be missing right now.

He also stressed that how a team wins can be just as important as winning itself, especially when building momentum and preparing for tougher opponents down the line.

For him, consistency and continuity in performance remain glaring gaps in the current Chiefs setup.

A Harsh Assessment of the Zesco United Test

Khan was particularly critical of Chiefs’ display against Zesco United, suggesting the Zambian side did not pose a level of challenge worthy of praise.

In his view, the opposition were no stronger than several teams competing in South Africa’s Motsepe Foundation Championship.

He went as far as saying that many local lower-division teams could comfortably match Zesco United, making Chiefs’ laboured performance even more concerning.

Capitalising on Mistakes, Not Control

Another issue Khan highlighted was how Chiefs found the net in both matches.

Rather than breaking teams down with authority, he believes they benefited from defensive errors.

Against Golden Arrows, he pointed to a goal that should have been flagged for offside, while against Zesco United he noted poor marking inside the box.

For Khan, these moments don’t reflect a team imposing itself — they reflect opponents switching off.

Pressure Mounts Ahead of Bigger Tests

While Chiefs have finally registered a win in their CAF Confederation Cup group, the former coach remains sceptical about their prospects if performances don’t improve.

His message was blunt: Kaizer Chiefs are not a club that should celebrate mediocrity.

The results may be ticking in the right direction, but unless the football matches the badge, the criticism is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
