In an emotional update, Ipswich Town shared the news that George Burley, a former player and manager, is currently undergoing treatment for cancer.
Burley, a legend both on and off the pitch, is known for his long and impactful association with Ipswich, as well as his contributions to other clubs.
Burley’s Longstanding Legacy at Ipswich
George Burley’s connection with Ipswich runs deep.
He joined the club as an apprentice in 1972, making his senior debut just a year later.
Over the next 13 years, Burley became a key figure, notching up an impressive 500 appearances.
His tenure with the team helped solidify his status as one of the club’s icons.
After leaving Ipswich at 29, Burley went on to play for other clubs, including Sunderland, before returning to Ipswich in 1994 for one final season before retiring.
Burley’s Personal Battle and Optimism
The club announced Burley’s health battle in a heartfelt statement on Tuesday.
Burley, now 68, also spoke publicly about his diagnosis, saying, “After feeling unwell earlier this year, I have recently received a diagnosis and I am taking positive action to fight the disease.”
Despite the challenges, Burley remains optimistic, adding, “It has been a difficult time, but I am feeling much brighter now.
In fact, I am able to get to matches at Portman Road and I am enjoying watching the team playing back in the Premier League.”
He expressed gratitude for the support he and his family have received, while also requesting privacy during this tough period.
Manager and Chairman Show Support
Current Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna paid tribute to Burley, describing him as one of the club’s greatest managers.
“It has been a pleasure to get to know George since I arrived at Ipswich.
He is a positive and optimistic character, and I know he will also take that attitude into the battle he now faces.
We are all right behind him,” McKenna said.
Ipswich Town chairman Mark Ashton echoed these sentiments, adding, “Our thoughts are with George, his wife Jill, and their family.
It’s always great to see him here in the directors’ box on a matchday, and we will do everything we can to support one of our all-time greats.”

He earned 11 caps for Scotland and took charge of Ipswich as a manager from 1994 to 2002, overseeing 413 games.
He later managed teams such as Colchester, Derby, Southampton, and even the Scottish national team.
