Anthony Ramos, best known for his breakout role in the Broadway sensation Hamilton, recently shed light on his early earnings during the show’s Off-Broadway days.
Speaking with financial influencer Vivian Tu, popularly known as “Your Rich BFF,” the actor shared candid insights into the challenges of managing money as a performer.
The Humble Beginnings of Hamilton
Before Hamilton became a cultural phenomenon, Ramos was earning just $420 per week while the show was still Off-Broadway.
Reflecting on that first paycheck, he admitted, “Yo, it was nice… Well, no, no, actually it wasn’t,” emphasizing the modest wages performers earn before reaching Broadway.
Things improved financially when the show transitioned to Broadway, but not as much as some might expect.
“If you’re an ensemble or chorus member, you’re probably making like $1,800 a week,” Ramos revealed.
However, he quickly broke down the expenses performers face: agents take 10%, managers another 10%, and hefty New York taxes can claim 30–40%.
“If You’re Not Smart With Your Money, You’re Beat”
Ramos didn’t hold back when discussing the financial pitfalls performers must navigate.
“If you’re not smart with your money, you’re beat!” he warned, highlighting the importance of financial literacy for actors.
His transparency resonated with fans and followers on social media, many of whom praised his grounded perspective.
Fans and Industry Professionals Respond
The post featuring Ramos’s financial breakdown drew widespread admiration.
One Instagram user noted, “Anthony is a New Yorker through and through. Solid head on his shoulders and really down-to-earth.”
Another appreciated the insight, commenting, “That breakdown is helpful. A lot of people hear the number and don’t realize that’s not what ends up in your pocket.”
A drama teacher from DePaul University even shared how Ramos’s honesty would benefit aspiring actors: “I find it essential young actors understand the economics of it so they can be empowered to make smarter financial decisions. Sending this to ALL my students.”
Life After Hamilton
After originating the roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton, Ramos left Hamilton in November 2016, passing the torch to Jordan Fisher.
His career has since flourished, with notable performances in films such as A Star Is Born, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
Most recently, he appeared in Twisters.
A Versatile Performer
Ramos’s talent isn’t confined to the big screen.
He has also taken on memorable television roles in shows like Will & Grace, She’s Gotta Have It, In Treatment, and the upcoming Disney+ series Ironheart.
His theater journey continued with a lead role in the 2018 production of In the Heights.
