Logan Bailly, a former Celtic goalkeeper and Belgian international, has shared a personal story about his battle with alcoholism, revealing the difficult challenges he faced both on and off the pitch.

Despite his professional success, which included representing Belgium in eight international matches and playing for Celtic for two years, Bailly struggled with addiction throughout much of his career.

Hiding His Addiction While Playing Professional Football

In a candid interview with Belgian media outlet Sudinfo, Bailly opened up about how he used to mask his drinking problem during his playing days.

“Let’s say it like it is – I was an alcoholic,” he admitted. He explained that he would often pretend to go out for simple errands, like buying bread in the morning, but instead, he would secretly down two or three beers to satisfy his cravings.

The constant need for alcohol was something he tried to conceal, but ultimately, it was impossible to hide.

Turning His Life Around Through Treatment

Bailly, now playing for Belgian club Virton, credits his recovery to the Vie Libre alcohol treatment programme in Oupeye, close to his hometown of Liege.

This program helped him take control of his addiction and begin his journey toward a healthier life.

Reflecting on the moment that made him realize he needed to change, Bailly said, “The turning point came when I looked at myself in the mirror and told myself, ‘Logan, that isn’t you.'”

A New Beginning and Focus on Family

Having struggled with his health for many years, Bailly recognized that his lifestyle was not only affecting him but also his loved ones.

Now, at 39 years old, he is embracing a fresh start.

“The thing that makes me happiest now is seeing the joy in my children’s eyes,” he shared.

Bailly’s story is one of personal growth, determination, and hope, as he looks forward to a new chapter in his life.
