Football icon Morgan Gould challenges Stellenbosch FC defender Athenkosi Mcaba to pursue excellence and regain his Bafana Bafana position

Former Stellenbosch FC defender Morgan Gould has thrown down the gauntlet for Athenkosi Mcaba, encouraging the young player to elevate his performance and make a return to the Bafana Bafana national squad.

Known for his own contributions to South African football, Gould believes Mcaba has the potential to become a central figure for both club and country.

Mcaba’s Journey to Stellenbosch First Team

Mcaba joined Stellenbosch’s first team in the 2021/22 season after excelling with the reserve squad in the DDC.

His early performances were impressive, and he quickly became a reliable player for the Cape Winelands team.

Last season, he made history with Stellenbosch by helping the club secure its first major trophy, the Carling Knockout Cup.

This year, the 22-year-old has already made 10 appearances and contributed to five clean sheets, solidifying his position as a core part of the team.

Gould’s Encouragement for National Team Return

Gould, who joined Stellenbosch FC in their debut PSL season in 2019/20, admires Mcaba’s abilities on the field.

Reflecting on Mcaba’s first senior call-up to Bafana Bafana in March 2022, Gould highlighted the young defender’s skills and his potential for growth.

“Athenkosi Mcaba is one of the most talented defenders I’ve seen in South Africa,” Gould told FARPost.

“His ball-handling is impressive, and his contributions to Stellenbosch have been crucial.”

He noted that Mcaba’s momentum was temporarily stalled due to an injury at the start of the 2022/23 season, but praised the player’s recovery and current form.

A Bright Future for Mcaba in Bafana Bafana

Gould believes Mcaba’s future with the national team could be bright if he continues to perform consistently.

“I think he needs to push himself further to secure a spot in the Bafana Bafana lineup. At just 22, he has plenty of time to learn and grow within the national team environment,” said Gould.

With Gould’s encouragement, Mcaba has a clear challenge before him: to prove his worth and earn his place back on the national stage.
