Southampton residents woke up to alarming news on Sunday morning as a fire broke out at University Hospital Southampton, forcing a major emergency response.
The blaze, which started in the west wing of the hospital, led to the evacuation of hundreds of patients and caused significant disruption to hospital operations.
Hundreds Evacuated, No Injuries Reported
Around 200 patients had to be moved to safer areas within the hospital after the fire ignited in the endoscopy section.
Thankfully, no one was injured, and staff worked swiftly to ensure everyone was accounted for.
Chief medical officer Paul Grundy explained that although the fire started in an area without patients, it is connected to multiple wards both above and below, necessitating a wide evacuation.
Firefighters Mobilized in Large Numbers
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service dispatched more than 110 firefighters to the scene, using breathing apparatus, hose reels, and an aerial ladder platform to tackle the flames.
Group manager Larry Mackrell, who led the operation, confirmed that the fire has now been fully contained, though crews remain on site to carry out smoke clearance and ensure the building is safe.
Hospital Operations Severely Disrupted
Roads around the hospital were closed, and visitors were advised to stay away.
All planned outpatient appointments for the day were canceled, with the hospital urging patients with less urgent conditions to seek care at nearby facilities such as the Royal South Hants Hospital or Lymington.
Staff parking has been made available on site to ensure medical teams can continue their work without delay.
Patients Being Cared for Amidst Evacuation
Many of the evacuated patients are currently being cared for in hospital corridors and main entrances while staff work to find more permanent arrangements.
Paul Grundy emphasized that patients are being assessed according to clinical need, and those requiring higher levels of support have been moved to appropriate areas within the hospital.
Investigations Underway
At this stage, the cause of the fire remains unknown.
Mackrell confirmed that while the fire stayed contained to the room of origin, smoke spread throughout the floor, resulting in a significant impact.
Fire investigators are now preparing to examine the site to determine what sparked the incident.
Hospital Prepares for Ongoing Challenges
The hospital and emergency services continue to manage the aftermath, with teams on standby as they work to restore normal operations.
Grundy reassured the public that all medical staff are fully engaged in keeping patients safe while the investigation proceeds.
