Fire Razes Niger Market, Destroys Goods Worth Millions Of Naira

Four people were alleged to have suffered varying degrees of injuries and were transferred to Mokwa General Hospital for medical treatment following the conflagration, particularly traders who slept in their stores.
Mohammed Shaba, the town’s Paramount Ruler, the Ndalile-Mokwa, verified the occurrence to Channels Television over the phone, stating that the fire, which started about 4 a.m., had destroyed more than half of the market.
“At roughly 4 a.m., the fire broke out. They contacted me, and I contacted the fire department.
They’ve been trying to put out the fire, but due to a lack of tanks, the fire is still burning as I speak to you,” he said.
According to the traditional ruler, some hoodlums took advantage of the raging fire to steal goods but four of them had been apprehended.
“This is a rural market where foodstuffs are being sold in abundance.
We are a bridge between the north and the south in terms of the supply of food. More than half of the market is gone,” the traditional ruler explained.
Marketers were counting their losses, according to Etsu-Kpo Mokwa, one of the traders.
“It will take many merchants years to recover from this calamity,” he said, describing the episode as “devastating.”
The losses are still being tallied.
Officials from the fire department are currently working to put out the blaze.
