…By Dorcas Funmi for TDPel Media. The organizers of Felabration, an annual music festival dedicated to honoring the memory of Nigerian Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, have announced the dates for this year’s edition.
Taking place from Monday, October 9 to Sunday, October 15, 2023, Felabration is a week-long celebration that pays tribute to Fela’s legacy as both the creator of the Afrobeat genre and a prominent human rights activist.
Honoring Fela’s Legacy:
Felabration was initially conceptualized in 1998 by Fela’s daughter, Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti, as a means to honor her father’s remarkable contributions.
Since then, the festival has become an annual tradition that celebrates Fela’s musical and activist achievements.
Theme: ‘Question Jam Answer’:
In a press release distributed to journalists in Lagos on Friday, June 16, 2023, the organizers unveiled this year’s theme as ‘Question Jam Answer,’ inspired by Fela’s 1972 classic record of the same name.
The choice of this song aligns with the current socio-political atmosphere in Nigeria, following the intriguing general election, where people are seeking answers to pressing questions.
A Celebration of African Music, Creativity, and Resilience:
Felabration 2023 aims to deliver an authentic and vibrant showcase of African music, creativity, and resilience.
The festival will encompass various artistic expressions such as art, dance, fashion, and music, providing a comprehensive platform for cultural celebration.
Diverse Activities and Engaging Competitions:
Similar to previous editions, this year’s Felabration will host a range of activities, including the Senior Secondary Schools Debate, The Fela Debates (Symposium), The Afrobics Dance Competition, The Artwork Competition, The Dress Fela Fashion Competition, and The Musical Concert, among others.
The organizers have confirmed the participation of renowned Nigerian musicians, as well as international artists who are set to perform at the New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja, Lagos.
Nigeria’s Premier Music Festival:
Felabration has gained recognition as Nigeria’s largest music festival, attracting tens of thousands of attendees each year.
With its diverse lineup of events and performances, the festival continues to captivate music enthusiasts and fans of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, ensuring his legacy remains alive and celebrated.
