Family camping trip turns fatal as boy and grandfather are found dead in their tent from possible carbon monoxide poisoning in Powys, Wales

What was meant to be a peaceful family getaway turned into a devastating tragedy for a family from Berkshire.

During a camping trip in the Welsh countryside, a 12-year-old boy and his grandfather were found dead in their tent, suspected victims of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.

Discovery of the Tragedy

Kaicy Rakai Zelden Brown, aged 12, and his 66-year-old grandfather David Brown, were discovered unresponsive in their tent by Kaicy’s uncle.

The uncle, who had been sleeping in a nearby tent, made the tragic discovery at around 11 a.m. on September 14 in Powys, mid-Wales.

The family had traveled 200 miles from Earley, Berkshire, hoping for a quiet outdoor retreat, but the trip ended in heartache.

Cause of Death Under Investigation

Authorities suspect carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a camping stove may be the reason behind the deaths.

Emergency services were called to the scene, but unfortunately, neither Kaicy nor his grandfather could be saved.

Pontypridd Coroner’s Court heard that a toxicology test would be conducted to confirm the levels of carbon monoxide in Kaicy’s blood.

Senior coroner Graeme Hughes expressed his condolences to the grieving family, describing the loss as deeply tragic.

Ongoing Investigation and Legal Disputes

The inquest into both deaths has been adjourned as the investigation continues.

David Brown, Kaicy’s grandfather, lived in Wokingham, Berkshire, and an official inquiry is underway regarding the circumstances that led to this unfortunate event.

Fundraising Effort to Support Kaicy’s Grieving Mother

In the wake of this unimaginable loss, friends of Kaicy’s mother, Jessica, have started a GoFundMe page to support her.

The funds will help cover funeral expenses, a memorial, and legal fees.

A dispute has arisen within the family over where Kaicy will be laid to rest, adding further distress to an already heartbreaking situation.

As of now, over £1,500 has been raised towards the £5,000 target.

The family is asking for donations to ease Jessica’s financial burden and to support other families in need.

What’s Next?

The investigation into the deaths of Kaicy and David is ongoing, and the inquest has been adjourned for a later date.

Meanwhile, the family is navigating not only the emotional pain of their loss but also legal matters concerning Kaicy’s final resting place.

More information is expected to come once the investigation is complete, and the community continues to rally behind Jessica during this difficult time.
