Liz Truss, the minister for equality and women’s issues, names seven new commissioners to the Social Mobility Commission board.

The new hires will assist Katharine Birbalsingh in her capacity as SMC Chair.
Following this year’s State of the Nation report, the new board members will promote the SMC’s independent work.

The Board has nominated Dr. Raghib Ali, Resham Kotecha, Matthew Goodwin, Ryan Henson, Rob Henderson, Parminder Kohli, and Rob Wilson for a term of four years.

They will include a new group of advisers, from a variety of ethnic origins and with experiences in academia, education, and business.

The Social Mobility Commission (SMC) published its State of the Nation report in June after Katharine Birbalsingh and Alun Francis were named as Chair and Deputy Chair, respectively.

The report and the Chair’s accompanying statement have changed the focus of the SMC’s work, which the recently nominated Commissioners will aid in advancing.

“Everyone in the UK should have the freedom to fulfil their full potential,” said Liz Truss, Minister for Women and Equalities.

These selections represent a victory for equality in our nation as we work to increase social mobility and guarantee that everyone has the opportunity to achieve.

The SMC will be able to carry out its crucial job to ensure that a person’s circumstances of birth do not dictate outcomes in life thanks to the combined skills and experience of the incoming Commissioners.
Additional Information:

The Governance Code on Public Appointments was followed in making these appointments.

The Life Chances Act of 2010 established the Social Mobility Commission as an independent statutory body (an entity constituted by an Act of Parliament).
