In the making of the acclaimed 2018 film “The Favourite,” Hollywood star Emma Stone and Peep Show’s Olivia Colman found themselves in an unusual situation.
The movie, set in the context of England’s war with France during Queen Anne’s reign, featured Emma as Baroness Abigail Masham and Olivia as Queen Anne herself.
The story revolves around Queen Anne’s friend, Lady Sarah, played by Rachel Weisz, who effectively rules the country during her friend’s ailing health. When Abigail, a new servant, enters the scene, the dynamics of the story take a rather awkward turn.

Olivia Colman recently shared a quirky behind-the-scenes story from the film on The Graham Norton Show. She admitted to playing a prank on Emma Stone during a particular intimate scene. Emma had expressed concerns about the scene, and Olivia decided to have some fun.
Olivia disclosed, “Emma Stone was worried about me though because she had to touch me intimately under the sheets. In order to avoid finding anything you shouldn’t have found… I asked the make-up department if they had a sponge.”
The Sopping Wet Sponge Prank
To convince Emma that she was touching Olivia’s intimate area, Olivia decided to use a wet sponge. Olivia recalled, “I put a sponge there and I said ‘it’s alright, there’s a barrier, you’ll be fine’… It was a big wet sponge.
She was going up my leg, and her face was a picture when she reached it! ‘It’s alright, it’s a sponge, it’s a sponge!'”
Challenges During Intimate Scenes
Olivia Colman also mentioned the challenges they faced during the intimate scenes in the film. Having spent several weeks rehearsing and becoming close friends, the cast had to overcome any potential embarrassment.
Olivia explained, “We had rolled on the floor, and giggled, and eaten together and shared everything. We’d become very good friends.
Snogging is fine, because snogging Rachel Weisz is like you’ve won the lottery. The other bit – being fingered by Emma Stone – we really struggled with not giggling at that.”
Emma Stone’s Perspective on Nudity in Film
As for Emma Stone’s perspective, she revealed her openness to nudity in film. In another scene from “The Favourite,” Emma “begged” to be fully naked, expressing her desire to challenge the norm. She explained, “I had the sheet up around me.
As we were shooting it and we did a few takes, I said, ‘Can I please just be naked?’ I think it’s going to give Sarah something to look at when she sees that I’m not just under the sheet covered up. Olivia was like, ‘No, don’t do it!’ […] I chose to do it. I was like, ‘This makes sense to me.'”
Emma Stone’s Upcoming Nudity in “Poor Things”
Emma Stone is taking her comfort with nudity in film to a new level in her upcoming project “Poor Things.”
