Denzel Washington finally breaks silence on Will Smith’s attack on Chris Rock at the Oscars ceremony

Denzel Washington has finally broken his silence about Will Smith’s attack on comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars ceremony.

Washington was seen consoling Smith after the incident that shocked millions of people.

Speaking during T.D. Jakes Leadership Summit, Washington posed the question, “Who are we to condemn?”

We all know what happened at the Oscars by now – Smith didn’t take too kindly to Rock making a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald bead, which the comic compared to the female action figure G.I Jane.

He walked up to Rock, who was presenting an award on the Oscar stage, then smacked him, to everyone’s shock. Pinkett Smith shaved her head after she was diagnosed with Alopecia, a condition which leads to hair loss.

Denzel Washington said he prayed with Will Smith, alongside Tyler Perry, just moments after the slap. But Washington didn’t really share what the trio spoke about.

“Fortunately there were people there, not just me but others [like] Tyler Perry came immediately right over there with me. Some prayers.

“I don’t wanna say what we talked about, but there but for the grace of God go any of us. Who are we to condemn? I don’t know all the ins and outs of this situation, but I know the only solution was prayer, the way I saw it, the way I see it,” Washington said.

He also said the “devil got a hold of him that night.”

“There’s a saying when the devil ignores you, then you know you’re doing something wrong. The devil goes, ‘Oh no leave him alone, he’s my favorite.’ Conversely, when the devil comes at you, maybe it’s because he’s trying to do something right. And for whatever reason the devil got a hold of him that night.”

Smith announced he was resigning from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which oversees the Oscars.

“I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate,” he said in a brief statement.
