Political chatter has been buzzing online recently, with reports suggesting that Datti Baba-Ahmed, former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, might be throwing his hat into the presidential race.

The speculation stirred conversations across social media and traditional news platforms, but Baba-Ahmed has now stepped forward to clarify the situation.

No Presidential Bid Declared

Speaking to Channels Television on Friday, Baba-Ahmed dismissed claims that he had made any announcement about contesting the presidency.

He emphasized that his recent statements had been misunderstood.

“I never declared to contest the presidency two days ago,” he clarified.

Reaffirming Party Loyalty

Baba-Ahmed explained that his public remarks were meant only to reaffirm his continued membership in the Labour Party.

With ongoing discussions about the party’s future direction and leadership, his comments were interpreted by some as a sign of presidential ambition, but he insists that was not the case.

“Two days ago, what I did was simply say that I remain in the Labour Party,” he said.

“I never declared to contest the presidency, even though there could be a possibility of that happening.

I certainly did not declare for the presidency. I reiterated my membership of the Labour Party, and that is all.”

Following Proper Channels

The former vice-presidential candidate also stressed that any potential interest in running would follow official procedures, including the timetable set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Labour Party’s internal processes.

“The submission I made was that one will have to wait for the INEC timetable and for the party to make the call for people to indicate their interest. I did not declare,” he said.

Concern Over Social Media Misinformation

Baba-Ahmed also voiced concerns about the role of social media in spreading misinformation.

He urged professional media outlets to act responsibly as gatekeepers of accurate information.

“It is unfortunate that social media can be so sensational, putting out wrong narratives to emotional listeners.

I believe formal media like yours should serve as filters and barriers so that the general public can always consume the correct information,” he added.
