The Dallas Cowboys are looking to the future by scouting for a new quarterback, but don’t worry – Dak Prescott’s position with the team isn’t immediately at risk.
Stephen Jones, son of team owner Jerry Jones, shared with the Dallas Morning News that the Cowboys are targeting a quarterback to develop as a backup to Prescott.
The Quest for a Young QB to Support Prescott
Stephen Jones revealed that while the Cowboys are actively considering adding a young quarterback through the draft, it’s not a move to push Prescott out.
“You know, I think one of our goals is to get a young quarterback in the draft,” Stephen said.
However, he was quick to note, “I don’t know where that’s going to be.”
It seems that the team wants to prepare for the future, especially given Prescott’s injury history in the last couple of seasons.
Cooper Rush and Trey Lance Fill In, But with Limited Success
In 2024, both Cooper Rush and Trey Lance stepped in for Prescott when he was injured, but neither quarterback truly shined during those moments.
The Cowboys had acquired Trey Lance the previous year, trading a fourth-round pick for the former first-round pick, but his performance in limited play left something to be desired.
Last season, Lance completed just 25 out of 41 passes, raising questions about his development.
The High Demand for Quarterbacks in the Draft
One of the challenges the Cowboys face, according to Stephen Jones, is that quarterbacks – even those who may not start right away – tend to get drafted higher than expected.
He mentioned, “That’s why we gave a [fourth-round pick] for Trey.
It seems like all the quarterbacks, even guys we have in the fourth round, go in the first.”
With the unpredictability of the draft, the Cowboys are keeping an eye on quarterbacks who could be available later in the rounds but still offer good potential.

While quarterbacks like Cam Ward from Miami and Shedeur Sanders from Colorado are expected to be selected among the top 20 picks, several others could still provide depth in later rounds.
These include Jalen Milroe from Alabama, Jaxson Dart from Mississippi, Quinn Ewers from Texas, Riley Leonard from Notre Dame, and Kyle McCord from Syracuse.
Any of these players could potentially serve as a backup or future starter under Prescott’s leadership.

Prescott, who signed a massive four-year, $240 million contract extension in September, is set to earn a base salary of $47 million in 2025.

Prescott praised his approach to the game, saying, “He’s not going to take anything about this game lightly. He enjoys the work in it, kind of old-fashioned.”
