This is the moment a cyclist slammed into a vehicle windscreen with such force that the driver feared he was ‘dead,’ prompting him to exclaim to onlookers, ‘it wasn’t my fault.’
On May 23, plumber Ian Payne was driving to fix an emergency leak in Portsmouth, Hampshire, when a rider slammed into his bonnet from behind a parked van, seemingly without looking.
The rider, who was only wearing a baseball cap and no helmet, hit the car with such force that his head bounced off the windscreen and cracked it, before crashing to the ground and howling in pain.
The 68-year-old driver screeches to a halt and shouts’ shock’ out of his window to craftsmen working next to them, pointing out that it was the cyclist’s fault for speeding through the intersection without looking.
Mr Payne claims he contacted the cops and an ambulance, but the biker rode away before the ambulance came, enraged Ian, who claims the rider admitted to being inebriated.
‘Just as I got off the A3, there was a van on the island with some people replacing a light,’ he claimed.
‘I was driving about at around 18 miles per hour when this bike appeared out of nowhere,’ said the driver.
‘He’d come off the pathway, straight across one road, and onto the island, where he’d collided with me.’ He was lightning fast.
At first, it was just a shock. I did turn around and curse and yell at the guys who were changing the lights, ‘It’s not my fault,’ but I believe that was just the shock of the situation.
‘I’ve always believed I was a cautious driver, but he was traveling so fast that I couldn’t stop him.’ He had plenty of room to stop, so he should have done so on the opposite side of the road.

I was trembling a little. I had to take a few minutes to regain my composure because I was surprised. It did jolt me up. I had to smoke a couple of cigarettes for the first hour.
‘I thought he was dead when he went down because of the power with which he hit the window screen.’ On the video, only the cracks can be seen, but the window screen was broken right in.
‘I can’t believe he walked away after the way his head impacted it.’
Upon getting out of the van to check on the cyclist, Ian alleges that the rider admitted to not being sober.
‘When I got out of the van to see if he was okay, he stated he’d been up all night,’ Mr Payne recalled. To be honest, you couldn’t make sense of him because he wasn’t sober.
‘He had wandered off by the time the ambulance arrived.
‘I believe it is unfair that people on push bikes have lanes built for them yet are not insured.’ I believe it is incorrect. They should, in my opinion, be insured.
‘
I originally purchased my dashcam because I was continually witnessing scooters and push cycles pull out in front of people.’ As a result, I bought it for my own safety.
‘It all happened so quickly for me. At first, I felt awful for him, but when he told me he wasn’t sober, I realized it could have been a lot worse if I had been driving down the road with one of my kids in the car.
‘I believe he placed other individuals at danger by acting in that way.’
Mr. Payne shared the video on Facebook to raise awareness, and it has now received over 17,000 views and 500 comments.
‘I merely shared it on Facebook to make others know that dashcams are fantastic to have,’ he explained.
‘I believe you are more cautious as a result of what happened.’ It’s affected the way I approach cyclists.
‘I’m not trying to be funny, but without the dashcam, he could have said whatever he wanted.’ It’s already had 17,000 views, and I only put it up a few days ago.
‘I mean, the responses aren’t all that horrible. It’s been said in a few comments that it’s a bike route, but it isn’t.
‘However, I’ve received both negative and positive feedback.’ They realize it wasn’t my fault even in those statements.
‘He should have stopped and that was that.’
A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said: ‘We were called at 4.04pm on Monday 23 May to a report of a road traffic collision involving a van and a cyclist on the M275 southbound.
‘The cyclist, an 18-year-old man, sustained minor injuries. The circumstances of this incident are under investigation. No arrests have been made at the current time.’
