Cuba Decides Initiative Calls for International Support Amid Regime’s Ineptitude and Repression

According to a statement by Cuba Decides, the situation in Cuba is dire, marked by governmental ineptitude, negligence, political repression, and violence.

More than 1,000 political prisoners are being held captive under conditions tantamount to torture, with opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer among those missing since Nov. 28, 2023.

Call for International Action:

In an email, a representative of Cuba Decides urged democratic countries to form a coalition condemning the illegitimacy of the Cuban regime and standing in solidarity with the Cuban people as they strive to reclaim their sovereignty.

The email stressed the readiness of the Cuban populace to transition to a democratic system.

Four-Stage Roadmap for Transition:

The Cuba Decides initiative, comprising Cubans both within and outside the country along with international allies, has proposed a comprehensive roadmap for transitioning Cuba from the entrenched dictatorship established in 1959 to a democratic governance structure.

First Stage: Protecting Human Rights:

The initial step outlined in the roadmap is to acknowledge and ensure the protection of human rights for all Cuban citizens.

This includes fundamental rights such as freedom of speech, assembly, association, and civil liberties, which are essential for fostering a democratic society.

Conclusion:

The appeal from Cuba Decides underscores the urgent need for international solidarity and action to address the ongoing human rights violations and political repression in Cuba.

By advocating for the protection of human rights as the first step in the transition process, the initiative emphasizes the foundational principles necessary for building a democratic society.

It remains to be seen how the international community will respond to this call for support and whether concerted efforts will be made to facilitate Cuba’s transition towards democracy.
