Francis Atwoli, the Secretary-General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), has revealed why Deputy President William Ruto has been drawing larger audiences than former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Ruto, who is running for president in August, has been bringing large crowds to his rallies in recent months, which appears to have concerned Atwoli, who is a staunch admirer of Raila Odinga.
Ruto and his accomplices have been ferrying people to their demonstrations, according to Atwoli, who talked to one of the local dailies. This explains the large numbers.
Atwoli gave examples of Machakos and Western Kenya rallies where DP Ruto attracted huge crowds during last year’s by-elections but that didn’t translate into votes.
“What the top leadership of the hustler nation has been doing is ferrying people to create the perception of popularity, but when it came to the ballot, they had no impact.
“The reality has dawned and everyone has realized he has no support.
“He has been in western and you have seen huge crowds attending his rallies, but when it comes to voting they are nowhere,” Atwoli stated.
