Coolwater Capital teams up with JETRO to launch second VC accelerator program supporting emerging fund managers in Tokyo

As Japan’s startup ecosystem continues to grow and mature, a new generation of venture capitalists is getting the international edge they need.

The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and San Francisco’s Coolwater Capital have officially announced Cohort 2 of their Emerging Fund Manager Accelerator, and the momentum is stronger than ever.

A Program Built for Ambitious VC Talent

This accelerator isn’t your average training course.

It’s a three-month intensive program tailored for Japan-based fund managers who want to build institutional-grade venture funds with global relevance.

Everything is taught in English and designed for flexible participation — whether attendees join virtually or in-person.

Participants will go through eight core modules, attend regular networking events, and receive guidance through office hours and meetups — all with the aim of helping them raise capital and scale globally.

Lessons from a Successful First Round

Cohort 1 of the program made headlines when 17 General Partners (GPs) were selected from hundreds of applicants.

Together, these GPs are now aiming to raise over $500 million in new venture funds.

That early success has only strengthened the accelerator’s reputation as a launchpad for next-gen fund managers in Japan.

Who Should Apply?

The program is open to a wide range of emerging VC leaders, including:

  • Former startup founders

  • Corporate venture spinouts

  • Tech industry executives

  • Institutional investors
…as long as they are working on Japan-focused investment strategies.

What’s New This Time Around?

Cohort 2 comes with a series of upgrades aimed at deepening impact and reach:

  • More personalized support: Think 1-on-1 coaching for fundraising, LP strategy, and branding.

  • Better infrastructure: Expanded shared services to help with investor relations and fund positioning.

  • Hybrid flexibility: More localized assistance with both in-person and online programming.

  • Alumni engagement: A brand-new content platform and podcast series designed to keep past participants connected and learning.

Important Dates to Remember

Here’s a quick breakdown of the upcoming schedule:

  • Applications opened: June 11, 2025

  • Deadline to apply: July 16, 2025

  • Program kickoff in Tokyo: September 9–11

  • Weekly virtual sessions: Start right after the launch

  • Investor summit in New York: November 17–19 — the grand capstone event
