Conservative figures are urging Elon Musk to direct his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team to investigate Planned Parenthood in light of recent troubling reports about the organization.
These concerns have resurfaced following an eye-opening New York Times article that detailed the sorry state of many Planned Parenthood clinics.
According to the report, some clinics are underfunded, short-staffed, and dealing with botched procedures, including issues with abortions and IUD insertions.
Growing Support for Defunding
While Republicans have long opposed Planned Parenthood due to its role in providing abortions, there is now an increasing push for Musk to play a key role in cutting its federal funding.
Former Vice President Mike Pence’s organization, Advancing American Freedom, praised Musk’s efforts in eliminating waste and fraud in government programs, suggesting that defunding Planned Parenthood could be one of his greatest accomplishments.
They went so far as to state, “We truly believe that the opportunity to defund Planned Parenthood may be yours and President Trump’s greatest moment.”
The Financial Toll of Planned Parenthood
According to the conservative Women’s Congressional Policy Institute, Planned Parenthood receives over $500 million in government funding each year.
Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood clinic director turned pro-life activist, pointed to the New York Times report as a reason for Musk’s team to take action.
She argued that with such large sums of taxpayer money flowing into the organization, the care provided should meet higher standards.
“Planned Parenthood needs to be defunded immediately,” Johnson said in a Fox News interview, adding, “We can do better for women, and defunding Planned Parenthood is a great place to start.”
Musk’s Efforts to Cut Government Waste
Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency has made waves by targeting waste and fraud within the federal government.
In just under a month, DOGE claims to have saved taxpayers a staggering $55 billion.
These savings were primarily achieved by detecting and eliminating fraud, canceling unnecessary contracts and leases, and selling off government assets.
DOGE has also pledged to provide bi-weekly updates on its savings efforts.
Much of the savings so far have come from agencies like the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Department of Education, and the Department of Health and Human Services.
One of the department’s early actions included ending diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs across the federal government, which resulted in significant cost reductions.
Backlash and Support
Musk’s push to reduce government spending has sparked strong reactions from Democrats and government workers, many of whom have protested these efforts.
Critics argue that as an unelected business mogul, Musk should not be granted access to sensitive government data.
The White House clarified Musk’s role on Monday, noting that he serves as a senior adviser to the president, without any formal decision-making authority.
President Trump has strongly endorsed Musk’s work, framing it as a vital part of his mandate to root out government waste.
“We got elected to, among other things, find all of this fraud, abuse, all of this horrible stuff going on,” Trump remarked during a recent Oval Office meeting.
As Musk continues his push for efficiency, his next steps will likely have a significant impact on both government spending and the future of organizations like Planned Parenthood.
