Claudia Winkleman might be best known as the queen of The Traitors and a beloved host of Strictly Come Dancing, but there’s more to the Winkleman family than television fame.
Her half-sister Sophie Windsor is married into the Royal Family, linking Claudia to one of Britain’s most high-profile households.
Sophie, 45, tied the knot with Lord Frederick Windsor in 2009.
Lord Frederick is the son of Prince Michael of Kent and Princess Michael, and Sophie has since become close with senior Royals, including the Prince and Princess of Wales.
Life Behind the Royal Spotlight
Sophie hasn’t shied away from describing the pressures of royal life.
In November, she told The Times that life as a working royal can feel like “total hell” and “a form of torture.”
She explained that from birth, members of the Royal Family are thrust into a “blinding spotlight,” leaving little room for privacy or mistakes.
“None of them went on Pop Idol to be famous,” Sophie said.
“To have that kind of attention forced on you from day one, not knowing who to trust, and seeing lies written about you constantly… it’s brutal.”
She added that such scrutiny is “not remotely healthy,” though it’s unavoidable for royals.
Growing Up Winkleman
Claudia and Sophie share the same father, publisher Barry Winkleman, but grew up mostly apart.
Claudia, born in 1972, is nine years older and lived with her mother, journalist Eve Pollard, after Barry and Eve divorced when Claudia was three.
Sophie was born in 1980 to Barry and his second wife, author Cindy Black.
Despite separate upbringings, both sisters gravitated toward performing.
Sophie pursued acting and screenwriting, while Claudia became a household name on British television.
Sophie reflected on her childhood, saying they had “very separate lives” but a shared love for the arts.
Sophie’s Education and Early Career
Sophie attended the City of London School for Girls and later read English at the University of Cambridge.
While there, she joined the famed Cambridge Footlights, the comedy troupe that produced stars like Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, and Dudley Moore.
Her acting career eventually led her to Hollywood, where she appeared in Two and a Half Men as Zoe, Walden’s girlfriend.
She also wrote screenplays for stars such as Salma Hayek and Penélope Cruz.
Marriage Into Royalty
Sophie met Lord Frederick Windsor during a night out in Soho.
They married at Hampton Court Palace in September 2009, with Claudia attending the ceremony.
Sophie wore a silk gown by Anna Bystrova of Roza Couture, featuring hand-embellished sequins, beads, crystals, and a three-metre train — a nod to her mother-in-law Princess Michael’s favorite designer.
After the wedding, the couple moved to Los Angeles so Sophie could continue acting.
They returned to the UK after seven years, balancing careers and family life.
Family Life and Royal Duties
The couple has two daughters. Maud Elizabeth Daphne Marina was born in Los Angeles in 2013, while Isabella Alexandra May was born in London.
Both girls have already taken part in high-profile family events, serving as bridesmaids for Princess Eugenie and Lady Gabriella Windsor’s weddings.
Sophie has spoken warmly about her welcome into the Royal Family, saying in 2020 that she felt embraced by the Queen, Prince Charles, and Prince William.
“They’ve been wonderful,” she said.
“They’d never tell me off for pursuing a role, and everyone has looked after me.”
Claudia’s Own Royal Recognition
While Sophie has family ties to the Firm, Claudia has carved out her own path in broadcasting.
Last month, she was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by King Charles at Windsor Castle for her services to television — just weeks after her Strictly co-host Tess Daly received the same honor.
Though their lives have taken different paths, Claudia and Sophie remain linked by family, talent, and a connection to the Royal spotlight.
One sister brings glamour to television screens, while the other navigates life in the world of royalty — a family story that blends entertainment with the grandeur of Buckingham Palace.
